When you turn the key to the start position. What happens? Do you hear a single click or multiple clicks? Does the engine turn over?

As Jon said need more info. I had thisproblem on my old camaro and it ended up being my starter. I replaced the selenoid first hoping it was that, but to no avail. Replaced the whole starter and never did it again.

Mine made kind of a click followed by a whiirrr noise from the bottom of the engine.

turning key produces nothing, no click, engine does not turn over

I'm not sure how car behaves if it's a chip in a key. I don't know if it's cranks the starter, but does not start the car. I could check later tonight, I have couple keys without chip.
If it cranks, but does not start, you can be sure it's a starter, but if it does not crank (without the chip) it could be you key (chip)

Our car will still crank. Just won't start if the computer doesn't detect the transponder..

condition, now fob will not open the doors...but still opens trunk...took it to Infiniti dealer after about 30 min of trying could not open doors...fob battery checks out good
now have to lock doors with key.
have now purchased the switch under the dash which recognized that clutch is depressed....Dealer says that it will be very expensive for THEM TO FIX

You may just need a new actuator for the door locks. My car has this problem, but I just manually lock/unlock the car.

Not sure what kind of button you are talking about, but did you have them check the starter?

update...a week ago I noticed the alarm came on when trying to enter (car was not locked) a click on the key fob stopped it. .since I have pulled all fuses to check disconnected battery there have been no problems.
the dealer now says he thinks someone was trying to steal the car.

update..the thought is now that an attempt was made to steal car and the electronics went into imobilized mode...yesterday key fob opened trunk and pass side door. car has been starting fine ever since I remove and cleaned fuses and reinstalled. disconnected batter for some time.
update...today the key fob now opens all doors and trunk....the demons have been repelled
