Hey, I noticed I am having some heat issues and when I checked my coolant was low, but I did not see a leak. I refilled it and checked my oil and oil was good. Come to find out my fan in the DS was inoperable. So I figured I could add a couple gauges to monitor my oil pressure and temp along with maybe another sensor if I decided to get a triple cluster. I got to looking around and I am not sure if it would be better to go with a digital gauge or an analog gauge. Which is more cost effective, reliable, and easier to install?

 

Personally I've always felt that analog gauges would give me more accurate information. Even though this is probably not true at all, I prefer the look of traditional.

 

do you mean digital as in still a standalone gauge? my vote would be digital but im referring to getting a monitor and then setting your gauge view through that system... the only reason i would say digital is because after you use the 3 pod pillar you start to run out of space and in the long run a digital setup would be cheaper and easier to customize.

 

When I asked similar questions I caught flack from members asking why did I need gauges bla bla bla if I wasn't building a track car. It's cool to know exactly what's going on under your hood. I'm using Auto Meter volt and oil pressure analog gauges which took about 3 hours to install. It's scary to see the oil pressure gauge hit 100 psi when starting your G! You'll need to find an auto paint store to buy the correct paint for your pod, plastic requires a specific type of rattle can paint/primer and you need to match the color...Good Luck & enjoy the ride!

Thanks man. I can see how you would get flack. I don't see why you shouldn't know what's up under the hood. Its important to me to monitor the engine since it runs hot anyway.

 

Shouldn't be running hot, find out why! Air in your radiator, fans not coming on or water pump failure then there's the thermostat and a radiator not flowing because it's plugged up. All these items are easy to check out, running hot isn't a good idea!

Is a 100 psi a lot? Whats it at while driving?

 

Just at initial start. It's common.

 

Well my DS fan isn't coming on and before I knew about that I assume it worked, but its pretty hot in the engine bay. I plan on adding an oil cooler and flushing the coolant after I fix the fan.

 

The 100 psi is cold idle on a cool morning. After she's warmed up and idling at 600 rpm oil pressure is a constant 40 psi...Gary

 

I was starting to worry that my idle was low. I have noticed a lag in power. I have a lot of stuff to do on this car. Just seems like its been neglected.

 

Here's what I have going on. "Digital gauges" through Torque and an OBD-II Bluetooth adapter. You can change them constantly, very little to install, and cheap.
There's a bunch just coming off your sensors already, and then you can also get a small "expansion pack" that includes the codes for a bit more functions and gauges.

Not to mention it can log your location, Gs pulled, and all sorts of goodies like CEL codes and clearing.

 

It's nice, but it can not measure the really important things like oil pressure. It can do coolant temp which is pretty nice!

 

Yeah it's ironic that even with the expansion they have oil temp, A/F ratio adjustments, cooling fan switches and all sorts things you probably wont need, EXCEPT oil pressure. No factory sensor.

 

Thanks for the input. I will have to check those out.. As for the heat I swapped the oil and that helped, but I am in the process of replacing my cooling system.. Still in the fix what the other guy broke phase..
