G35 overheating.. Cant find the problem

About 2 weeks ago I was going to work and about 5 minutes into driving my car was already overheated. I couldn't drive it more than a few minutes without it getting hot. So I took it to my mechanic and he said the thermostat was bad. He put it in boiling water and it didn't do anything. He changed that and it ran fine for 2 days but yesterday I was sitting in traffic and I noticed the AC was blowing out warm air and the temp gauge was all the way to the top. I had someone pick me up and it sat in town for a few hours. I drove it home later that night with the ac off and it never had any problems. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

Its a 2004 g35 coupe. 65k miles

Most likely still have air in the system. Very common prom. This cars cooling system is a PITA to bleed.

Austin,

Make sure both cooling fans are working when you turn your A/C on. From what you described, it did not overheat with the a/c off. When the a/c is turned on the cooling fans should immediately come on.

Infiniti even extended the warranty on the fans to something like 10 years/90k miles. So see if they're turning on.

Most common issues with over heating, air in the system and fans not working. Take your G back to the mechanic and have him check both...Gary

Frankly I don't think I would take it back to the first mechanic that replaced the thermostat. I don't think he or she troubleshot the problem correctly to begin with. If I were you and I could not troubleshoot it myself, I would get a second opinion.

Its not hard to see if the fans are working. No need to be a mechanic.

My mechanic just called me and said one of the cooling fans are not working but he doesn't have time to fix it (he is almost 80, retired from Ford, and is leaving for vacation tomorrow.)

I have another guy that lives close to me that fixes small problems on cars. He just does it on the side. Is this something pretty easy to fix that he could do or would I need to take it to a dealership?

Changing out the fan motor is simple.

Changing the fan is simple, however some troubleshooting should be done to ensure the fan is the problem. The fan could be checked by disconnecting the connector at the fan and applying 12 volts directly to it with jumper test wires. If the fan turns then it could be a relay related problem, or the fusible link H or I depending on what fan is not working. You can gamble on the fan and most likely it is the fan, but I would rather be sure. Remember, most electrical components cannot be returned.

I just talked to him again. He has never worked on an Infiniti and didn't want to get stuck in the middle of fixing it but said he would give it a try. He asked if I could print him off the wiring schematic and any other diagrams that would help. Does this site have any that I can download? He thinks it could be the fan clutch because one of the fans doesn't run at all and the other just runs at a low speed.

Here is a link to an excellent manual, I bought one to do the work on my 2003. The wiring schematics are descent good enough for troubleshooting.

I don't think there is a clutch, these are electric fans. They are either on or off, I could be wrong on this, I would have to research this further. In any case, RockAuto.com has a fan assembly for $100+shipping. Hope this helps.
