HOW LOW was oil when U "RAN your car (high rpm ?) you see if you ran high rpm with low oil in crankcase, an engine when running may have up to a quart in suspension, it is easy to cause much damage when crankcase runs out of supply. knocking is usually wiped out connecting rod bearings

If you standing in front of the car with the hood open and cannot hear the noise, I doubt you have rod knock. Upload a video.

Rod knock will get louder as the RPMs increase. Ask a mechanically inclined friend to listen to your motor for you.

Could also just be lifters in the head. The VQ is a very noisy engine sometimes, so if the knock isn't too loud, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on your oil.

Did your oil light ever come on with the engine running? It could happen under heavy cornering with low oil or when parked on a hill since the system is not dry sump. If this happened, the chances of you doing damage as a result of low oil are much greater than if it never came on. Damage generally occurs when the oil pump isn't picking up enough oil to circulate it through the motor at the necessary pressure.

Also... how many miles did you have on the oil at the time when it was low? Old oil (particularly non-synthetic) is a bit more likely to have damaging results when you run it real low because you're essentially putting increased wear on the smaller volume of oil in the engine.

What weight oil did you use when you did the oil change?

A higher viscosity oil could help. With 97K miles, there is bound to be some normal engine parts wear and tear. It would'nt be to costly to try it out. I believe you can run 10W40 with ambient temperatures above 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the service manual for your year.

You might consider using a higher weight to see if it helps, its a cheap enough test. I would not change the filter since you just replaced it.
