finally hit the 1000mile mark....gave it some gas

I know you are supposed to wait till 1200 miles or so, but I figured, screw it. I am leasing the car anyways and I have been itching for a while to take it over 4k rpms. I let the car warm up and turned the VDC off and let it rip while merging into traffic and let me tell you in first gear that rear end can get away from you. I collected my composure and shifted to second, but to my dissapointment, the car didn't seem to put me back into my seat as much as my 01 Acura Cl-s did. Now i know the G35 is faster, but for some odd reason when i floored the car in first and 2nd ( i did this a couple of times) it seemed a little weak.

The last manual I owned was over 3 years ago and that was a 00 Celcia and I know after a few months of driving it I realized that I didn't fully understand how to drive it fast in the beginning but it definitely felt faster as time went on and I learned how to drive it better, so I'm hoping the same will happen here.

On a side note, I got a real big chirp going into 3rd which was really cool.....never able to do that in my celica or acura.

The only reason why your Acura put you back into your seat is because it's FWD. Same thing happens when I floor my Maxima, it feels a lot faster than it really is. The throttle response in the G is totally different, as is the fact that it's RWD.

When are you taking it to the track?

I'll probably play around with it some more today on my way to work, to learn the shift points as first gear is hard because the rpms climb so fast and you can't really see the redline point....i just gotta remember its at 7k

ahhh...i would have loved to gone to the track last week when it was in the 40's at night, right now its 80 degrees and i think i will be dissapointed if i go.

Also, the G has a very linear power delivery. Your CLS will always have that VTEC surge so you may feel disappointed in your G's acceleration (until you race a CLS that is )

Yup, just play with the REV light, it's got to be of help, I do remember 1st gear in the G being pretty short.

I thought a lot of people didn't go to Bithlo last week because of traction issues with their summer tires in the cold? I can't wait for someone to take their 05 6MT to the track.

Well you don't want me to be the first to go, i have always seemed to run lower than the norm. I took my Acura once and got 4 runs in, best time of 15.0x, took my celica 3 times and got maybe 15 runs in and got a best of 15.0x, both where just with intake, though later i did mod my celica more.

Most people with the Acura 5at where running mid to high 14's with intake and pretty much the same for the celica people....though the times were more skewed with the celica people.

Well you have the Florida factor in here. Gs here in Florida rarely run what people run up north in NC or NJ or wherever. Some tracks are just faster, South Florida is the worst because of the constant humidity and reformulated gas. You can't expect to run your personal best down here.. Does the 01 CLS have the same specs as the 02/03? If it does, those are pretty fast.

yup same specs, never got the headers on them though... they add~25fwhp.

About the track being in florida, this is true, but what about that guy that went last week to bithlo and ran a 14.1 with a 5AT sedan? was he stock?

I think he ran a 14.2, he is stock but he's been racing for years and obviously got a pretty good launch. I was quite surprised too.

But don't worry too much about your times.. run for the heck of it if we ever get any cooler weather anytime soon! You don't have to post what you ran or anything.. only we FGC insiders are allowed to know I'm done instigating

Chaz,

I suspect that the power delivery between the '04 and '05 is indeed different. 2004 drivers will experience a surge at about 4k rpm, but based on your testimonial it's pretty linear. I suspect while they lowered torque to 260lb/ft, they probably flatten it out a bit also. I can't confirm until I see a dyno. Finiti35 is right about FWD vs RWD. Here's a quick story: Coming home last night, a R32 was stalking me. When we got a chance to line up on the highway, we went at it. He had one passenger and we went from 70 to ???? Anyway, I had him about 1.5 cars. All the while, the engine and ride was smooth. It didn't seem like I was going that fast as there were no power surges or lurching. I know R32s are fast cars. So what you feel and what's actually happening is two different things.

I have always subscribed to the break in procedure that requires you to stage the motor through several variations of going through almost all of the revs up until about 700 miles. Especially on aluminum block cars.

I think the first time I got close to redline was when I had about 300 miles, so you must be really really disciplined to wait 1000miles!

Enjoy the new bounds of your ride, life begins at 4000 RPMs!

***UPDATE***

After driving some more tonight I have already felt my driving higher in the RPM's ability getting better and along with that the car feels much faster. One problem though...I eased on to the gas easy in 1st then gunned it all the way to redline and shifted hard into 2nd but doing so caused a lot of wheel spin and the car even kind of slid sideways a bit. This was very cool, but this would also hurt me on the track or in a race by slowing me down..is this normal?? I definitely want to get this car to sound like it has some ***** too, it sounds very quiet, a lot more than my acura.........im thinking CAI for starters.

ScapGF~ Yes it was hard waiting till 1k miles but in all of my other new cars I have never done it, so i figured I give it a go.

about "chirping" the tires when shifting gears....its because the load of torque is still way up there. someone please explain this in better technical terms. i cant explain things very well...haha.

audiblemayhem ran a 14.2 in a 5 a/t sedan. i ran a 14.3 the same night in my 6 m/t coupe. that was only my 2nd time racing the car. i think with more experience, i will lower my times a little bit more...i hope. you will have to go out to the track with me sometime.

I understand why i spun into 2nd, but this can affect my 1/4 mile time, should i shift slower into second?

when you shift, you always want to shift as fast as possible. the faster you shift, the less rpm's you will lose and the higher the output of horsepower and torque. if you shift slower, you will be in the lower rpm's and it will take you that much longer to get up to speed.
