Project Valve Cover Gaskets and Oil Catch Can Installation

I finally took some time off for the holidays and completed two projects I've had on hold for a while. First I replaced the valve cover gaskets and plenum gaskets, part of this project included new spark plugs (OEM NGK PLFR5A-11). I then installed an Oil Catch Can I picked up on eBay about six month ago. Both projects were simple enough, the valve cover gasket was a challenge particularly the passenger side. If you decide to do this your self, you need to reserve a couple of choice words as you will use them when you get to the passenger side.

Everything went smooth and after an hours test drive, no leaks noted. Here are some pictures of both projects, I used clamps to block the coolant hoses that go to the throttle body and sealant on the tubes where they make contact with the valve covers. On one of the pictures I am pointing to one of the six orifice holes in the plenum chamber, three of these were clogged with caked up oil, now they are all nice and clean. The spark plugs I removed definitely needed it, I would venture to say that they had never been removed.

More Pic's,

The final step was to wash the engine compartment and install the lower engine compartment plastic air dam pan.

Update,

Well, it has been a little over 5 month and 6K miles since I replaced the valve cover gaskets and installed the oil catch can. Today I drained the oil catch can for the first time ever and the results are as follows:

1. I drained 1 fluid once out of the oil catch can, assuming that the catch can catches at least 50% of the oil that is vented through it, that is not to bad in a 5 month period.

2. The oil dip stick reading was at 3/4 from the full mark, I am really satisfied with the results.

3. Bone dry engine, no external oil leaks as of yet.

Will do another update this coming December, which will make it a year since the work was performed.

Great thread Wuzz-Upp! Thanks for sharing those pic from your project, glad it turned out with no leaks or issues! What was the mileage on your coupe when project started?

Hey Gary, how's it going? Thanks for the comment.

The G had just over 114K when I did the work and it just turned 120K. She is purring like a ***** cat (kitten) . So far no problems what so ever, knock on wood.

The only thing that I am keeping an eye on is that noise that many of us experience coming from the valve cam sprocket area. Did some reading on it but have opted not to open the front of the engine just yet. I am going to baby it as long as I can, too busy with other projects, you know how it goes.

What was the "sealant" you used on the valve covers? It looks like epoxy, if so, how do you plan on ever removing them?

I hear you man, but it is not an epoxy, it is a two part sealant used in aviation to seal integral fuel tanks and pressurized cabins. It cleans up easy with a razor and seals like nothing else. I have been using this product since the early 80's. It is referred to as "PRC", "Pro-Seal" it does not harden like epoxy it remains pliable and flexible. it is not cheap but the results are incredible. Imagine this, the fuel tanks on large aircraft are the wings themselves and all the seams and fasteners on the wings are assembled wet with this product.

It does look like epoxy, so I can see why you would ask the question .
