Once and for all - Fixing the Damn Rear View Mirror Rattle!!

This has been mentioned before but from everything I read there was no definitive answer. Even keeping my volume at low levels I can hear it rattling. I know its the rear view mirror because if I hold it like I am adjusting it, it'll stop. I also know its not that plastic piece that connects from the windshield to the top to the roof line.

I heard of some taking out the buttons and putting foam padding in them. Has anyone else fixed this problem?? Please help. The rattle on the right rear finally stopped and now this one has started.

I cant even play any of my rap music now without hearing it!

I had my stock Bose bumpin for about 3 months never noticed the rearview mirror rattling. After I had my subwoofer's installed everything and even the cars in front of me shake! I was actually driving one day, and the piece that connects the mirror to the car windshield, its a little black thing ( whatever ) actually snapped in two and my mirror was just hanging by the wires. I got a new mirror the next day from the dealer ( warrantied too ) and its awesome, now it doesn't move or shake one bit.

I think though that the dealership would just blame the mirror rattle on my aftermarket stuff and not replace it. At least thats what I think they'll say if I bring it up to them.

IF your system looks stock/stealth just dont tell them, what are the chances they'd open up the trunk and say 'AHA'!!. Take it in, its worth a try!! If its that bad and dealer refuses to fix, you can TRY removing it and reapplying the mirror adhesive. My 2 previous cars both lost rear view mirrors the summer heat and after applying the adhesive they were stuck on real nice.

Well I know the service guy there and the last time I went in there and they fixed the rear parcel shelf rattle and they couldnt foam it all because of my amp in the back and said I'd have to remove it to fix it all. The guy always remembers me and is friends with my Dad so I'm pretty sure he will remember I have stuff in the back.

The thing is isnt anyone else having rattles with the mirror? It looks and functions fine. If someone has a fix Id rather try that before taking it to the dealer.

I just removed the rea view mirror all together. It's going to be hard to hear it rattle when it's sitting in my room.

I believe there is a dealer TSB for the rattle in the mirror. Mine seems to happen when I am accelerating or when I step on the clutch pedal. I'm going to get it fixed on the next oil change.

Mine does it too under the same conditions as well as when the Bose system is turned up...the bass is just too much....I pinned it to the rearview mirror within 30 seconds of hearin it....thank god because it usually takes me forveer to find the source of a rattle/squeek....atleast

there is a rattle comming from my rear window (passenger side), the car only has 2.5k miles and I dont even put music higher than volume 15 (on stock sound system). Can I claim the rattle on waranty and have them fix for free or is it normal for cars to rattle?

I had the same issue. The TSB says it is from the two piece trim and to put some felt pads under the trim. This did not work for me. Mine was actually coming from inside the mirror and my homelink was jacked up. The dealer ordered me a new one and exchanged it...no more rattles.

Yeah I dont think mine is from that two piece trim. If all they are going to do is put some foam under it just might as well not bother because I can do that myself. This does seem like its coming from the inside of the mirror. I just dont know if its me putting up my bass too loud.

Also, as far as rattles being common, they are but their are TSB's for them so supposedly they just stick some foam around that area for them to go away. Sometimes it works, but usually it doesnt. Its worth a shot for them to have it looked at.

I'm sure there is a TSB on the mirror rattle. I'd let the dealer fix it though, even if it is a foam pad solution. If you try, and it doesn't work, they might blame it on you. I think it is a relatively quick repair.

I don't think it should rattle just because of a lot of bass-after all, it shouldn't rattle on rough roads either. A lot of bass, however, can obscure the other frequencies in your music and make them muddy. I'm not familiar with the add-on sound systems and don't know about yours, but if you don't have a separate bass amplifier, the bass also uses a lot of the amp's power and leaves the other frequencies underpowered.

For G35CoupeMt, I don't think rattles are normal and the dealer should fix it.

Good luck.

Yeah, I have a JL sub and seperate amp just to power that. The bass in my car can sound like you can hear me from down the street but I don't put it at that level. I gotta go in next week anyways for my 15,000 mile checkup so lets see. I have a couple other TSB's that need to be taken care of.

ehm... so if your car rattles, can you take it and have them fix that under warranty?
