ticking sound from engine
#1
Ive done some searching and have gotten no where ... i just bought this car yesterday and its an awesome car. But, now there is a knocking / tocking sound coming from the engine .when im cruising at about 2.5k it sounds like a little jack hammer in the engine bay . i cant seem to get a straight forward answer so im gonna see what you guys have to say ... 05 G35 6MT ... 175,000.. just got a fresh oil change
Here is a video of the sound
05 g35 engine ticking / knocking noise:
After the sound started the car stalled twice and i got a code P0345, the vdc off light is lit as well as the slip light.. how screwed am i?

I Don't want to come across as a skeptic, but I have been turning wrenches since 1977 and frankly I don't see how that mechanic can make that precision determination with the valve covers installed. I hope he is right for your sake, but what I foresee happening, is him telling you that you have a different problem after the engine has been torn apart and you have no other option but to start forking out money. At best, I highly recommend you get a at least two more diagnosis from two different shops.

Welp, the mechanic i went to, used a tiny camera and put it inside the top of the motor where the oil cap is ..not putting all my eggs in 1 basket tho. i was smart and got an extended 4yr/100k warrentee... pretty much a powertrain deal so i think i have my bases covered =)
On another note, talk things over with your mechanic. I am sure the insurance is only going to cover the bad cam bearing only. With 175k on the engine, consider having all the bearings inspected or replaced while the engine top end is open and accessible. Don't forget there is a right and left cam drive system. Replace all your spark plugs with recommended NGK plugs and the valve cover gasket on the side that is not damaged. Good luck.

did anyone read that his car is throwing P0345 code?
that's your cam position sensor, and could be the culprit. especially with the stalling. change your cam sensors, its a very common issue with these cars. The vid shows a vq35 just like the one in yours just its FWD so where hes pointing out the sensor is, will actually be up close to the firewall point towards the driver and passenger on the G.

Thanks a ton! Im def going try and fix it .. got some questions... the car is throwing thr P0345 code, which is the camshaft postition sensor. Will the sensor cause the tick / knock? or is it plausable that something is indeed wrong with the cam which caused the sensor to throw the code? when looking at the cam thru the oil fill hole it did look as if the cam was kinda wobbling while rotating ...
