Plenum Help

There's really only two out there. Kintex (some kind of plastic) and the Crawford (metal) plenum. Crawford has a policy whereby if you want a lower price, you must send them your plenum. Neither plenum allows you to reinstall your engine cover (well, you could but you'd screw up your hood when you closed it). When I spoke with Crawford (the more expensive metal one) they said that the real benefit of the plenum isn't realized at the low end torque side. So any horsepower benefits are only gained when you drive over 4,500 RPM (which is where you gain the bulk of all your horsepower anyway). I was under the delusion that the gain was torque (faster take off) but it's only when the car is under way and moving along at a good clip...not what I cared about because I'm not looking for fast when I'm already going fast. Crawford told me all of this and I instantly found other ways to speed my money.

Crawford is very soon shipping a cast metal plenum and you don't have to send them your plenum. I think the price is $395.00 plus shipping and available from Performance Nissan. APS is also producing a cast plenum that is supposed to be available in the near future.

(1) Crawford DOES NOT require a core exchange any more. They have already sold the first 100 cast plenums and will not be making any more of the modified stock plenums.
(2) Cooling quicker with a plenum is not necessarily a good thing. Cooling too fast can cause high stresses to build up in the plenum. Repeated heating and cooling (thermal cycling) is leading the Kinetix plenums to fail (crack). Kinetix plenums do not have 2 center posts and center spacers to support the center of the plenum like the stock and Crawford plenums do. This allows the Kinetix plenum to flex more. This flexing and thermal cycling is the main reason that the plastic plenums are failing.
(3) APS does not have any plenums that have been delivered. They have been taking pre-orders but again, no plenum is available to the public. As a result, no dyno information, no released flow bench info, no data what so ever with APS. The only thing that sounds good is the port for the nitrous guys.
Crawford is BY FAR the clear choice. For $395 you get to keep your stock plenum, you get a cast aluminum part that is just as strong as your stock plenum and it looks just as stealth. Only kicker, you will have to remove the plastic engine cover with the Crawford Plenum.

Just installed a Crawford

I installed a Crawford Plenum last weekend along with a Z tube and JWT Popcharger at the same time.
1st off; the engine cover does fit back on, no problem. The cover will sit a little higher and there is a small gap around the oil filler but all 4 nuts lined up without any fussing. No resistance closing the hood.
The installation was very straight forward - I am not a mechanic and prefer to have my cars serviced by somebody else but I did all three of these installs in about 2-1/2 hours and that was with a few breaks to chat with the guy next to me in the garage.
The car did not require an ECU reset and it runs great!
I don't know which of these 3 upgrades has had the biggest impact but the car "feels" stronger, pulls harder and sounds AWESOME!
I would recommend this upgrade in a heartbeat!
One other note - the JWT Popcharger has a flimsy bracket to hold to a sheet metal seem in the engine bay. This is a poor design and I think I'll have to modify it to make it more secure.
