Hey fellas,

Went to start my car this morning and this gnarly sound came a knocking.

Is this the timing chain?

Any and all help appreciated.

it could be the valve lifters. What's your engine oil level?

 

oil level is fine.

 

Welcome to the noisy engine at start-up club . From what I have read many of us have this problem and the ones that don't will probably experience it some day. I found the following thread at another site that shows the most probable cause for this problem. I'll fix mine myself sometime in the future, but for now I,ll put up with the noise. Too many things on my plate right now. Hope this help some. Look at the videos in the thread, good info.

Does it go away after the car is running for awhile?

I have no idea, I was too scared that if I kept it running it would do more damage...

 

To me, it sounds as if it has been smoked one to many times by a Dodge Durango(mini-van). I would probably sell that 'ish and buy something more your style. Maybe a Jetta? I hear all the little southern women like Jettas.

 

First thing I'd do is take both the belts off (AC and Serpentine) and start the car for a brief period of time. It'll be running from the battery and it will set off a bunch of codes, but this will help eliminate any other moving parts. If you still hear the noise; I'd then pop off the left black cover (it's held on with RTV/screws) and see if the tensioner plunger is out all the way.

If plunger looks extended or slack guide is broke then you have a pretty involved fix on your hands.

I replaced my tensioner, water pump, guide rails, and primary chain about two years ago. It took me several weekends, because I had an extra car and time to do it (There is a DIY I wrote). Cost about 300-400 in genuine Nissan OEM parts. Nissan dealer wanted slightly over 1K just for the labor.....

To follow up with my problem..

I took the motor cover off and turned the car on to see if the noise was still there and it magically was not... the car fired up fine, no problems, funny sounds or anything. My friend listened with his motor stethoscope and he said everything seemed fine.

Been driving it for a few days now and everything is normal.. so I guess until next time..

 

i think the car was just pissed about those ricer headlights u installed
