Navigation issues

Hello! I've searched as best I can on here for someone with the same problem. If there's a thread, please direct me to it.
Anyways, I purchased a 2005 G35 Coupe with Navigation and the bose system, in a 6 speed on monday. I love it, but the navigation has an issue. When I push the button, it comes up about half way, snags and goes back into the dash. Sometimes I can nurse it to come all the way up, and rarely it does it by itself. Does anyone have an idea what it could be? I can't see anything it snags on maybe a motor issue?
Anyways, thanks in advance for the help.

George

Nice username... LOL.

Does it make any odd noises or sound weak (motor weak) when it's attempting to go up?

You're probably going to have to take apart that area of the dash to troubleshoot it. Maybe there's a buildup of debris in the track that it slides on or possibly the motor just needs to be serviced and cleaned. I've had to do this on my window motors.

No noise or anything...how difficult is it to take the dash apart?

I think it's a PITA. I've never done it myself but I'm pretty sure you have to remove the whole top piece starting with the trim around your clock, the dash beneath that, and then the trim piece around the Nav. There are DIY videos around on youtube. I'd start there.

The factory Nav. unit sucks a$$ anyways. I literally use mine just for monitoring fuel economy and marking oil changes... that's it.

I don't think I've used it as a means of navigational guidance in about 7 years. I just use my phone now.

Its possible that something is getting caught on the track for the Nav screen. Hard to tell what it is unless you take it apart though.

When you help it go up, does the screen turn on at all? If it doesn't, then your Nav screen motor is defective. If it goes up with your help and the screen turns on, then there is just something obstructing the track of the screen (probably a minor fix).

If the screen doesn't turn on at all, then it is the motor for sure. The usual fix is to buy the entire replacement center console stereo with Nav/AC controls which are around $350 on Ebay. I had this issue and had mine replaced.

Although some say the Navigation is outdated (well it is), I think the setup is still very cool and nostalgic. Back in 2006, I drove a new G35 coupe with the Nav and its still one of my favorite setups. There is a 2013 Map software update which costs $150 if you choose to purchase it.

Dude mine has done the same thing for years.
Honestly, I don't use it much anymore but when it does that I just kinda whack-a-mole it down a little as it's coming up...usually works. In my case, it's just off a track a bit so pushing it back down as it's coming up realigns it? Never had an issue with it not turning on so I know the system is still good...also make sure you're using a fairly updated nav disc.

I know this is old but it's my thread so whatever haha. I took part of my dash apart today and fixed the issue entirely. It was the small white plastic piece in the picture. There was supposed to be two screws in it. The top one fell out and the piece was free to wobble and get caught. I rotated it 180 degrees (I lacked the tools and hardware to properly fix it) but now it works great! Very simple. Hope this helps anyone else with the issue!

It's so nice when people return to post what the fix was. It will prob help someone out in the future as I bet this is a common issue.

But I second what partyman said. Factory Nav sucks. I haven't used mine in a year or two now and rarely have it up. I use my phone, which is much smoother to operate

I agree it sucks; I usually have it up for show purpose (because it looks cool) and to track my mileage/mpg's.
