Exhaust

I know that theres a thread titled "Why are most G35 drivers cheap" or something recently and I'd hate to contribute to that but I'm thinking of doing a muffler delete.

If you're angry or whatever, please just read my reasoning for this before getting your pitchforks out. So I live in New Zealand where you can easily find modified cars on the road. S15, R34,R33,R32,Civics, etc but G35(or skyline as we call it here) are rare hence the scarcity of aftermarket parts. I've been browsing and comparing aftermarket exhausts and I really like the sound of the Motordyne TDX2 but it costs around US$1.8k which is around NZ$2700 and that is before shipping charges and taxes, etc is added on! So yea it is really expensive to get parts for my G. I've considered the Top Speed Pro-1 exhaust but even that costs around USD$1k shipped (Double the retail price!)

So I was thinking of either getting the muffler removed or replace the resonator with one from motordyne. Replacing the muffler will make it insanely loud (which is okay since the motordyne is loud anyways) but it will lose some low end torque which im not so sure im going to be okay with.

So my question is, should I:
a) Remove my muffler
b) Replace the stock resonator
c) Remove my muffler and add an additional resonator to make it sound better(?)

Yes I want my exhaust to be louder and yes i am short on cash especially after 2 speeding fines and please be nice

You've gotta pay to play. sure you can remove the muffler or resonator but doing so will just be putting together parts not designed or engineered to work together. You may be loud but it won't be in a good way with a muffler/resonator delete.. just my 2 pennies

Instead of hacking up your stock exhaust, why not go to an exhaust shop and ask them to take off your stock muffler, use whatever tips they have, and make a muffler delete? Makes sense to me since G's are somewhat rare, I wouldn't ruin the stock exhaust, plus this would allow you to see if you like the loudness of it and still be able to return it to stock if you want. This is the route I would go had I not wasted money on an eBay exhaust.

I did consider a muffler delete. thats option A lol

anyways, Im worried about the drone it brings and others reported a noticeable low end torque loss

Muffler delete is like deeply kissing your Aunt, why would you want to? You don't need to spend the $$ that Motordyne systems cost, have a muffler shop build you a 2.50" system using a Magnflow style cross X pipe and their replacement muffler. Do they use cat converters in New Zeland, if not have them build a exhaust manifold back system.

I'm running test pipes and eBay HKS rep, and it's not too droney (rasp is a diff story). I drove 4.5 hours to Atlanta and it was fine. If you're considering the Top Speed Pro-1 (which looks like an HKS Rep to me), why not just buy a cheap rep off eBay that ships worldwide, take it to an exhaust shop and have them fix the flanges and weld in a magnaflow x-pipe / whatever else you want? I noticed a slight power shift with just the exhaust, but nothing terrible. However with my TP's, I have like 0 low end power, but I don't really care as I didn't buy the car to be fast anyway. Other than that, I would suggest Gary's method, you don't need the entire exhaust, just mix and match and save some money. GL tho man

Replica exhaust systems are cheap because that's how they're made, poor quality welds and thin wall cheap stainless pipe! Expect to have failure within one to two years under good conditions! Mix and Match? That's one sure way to have a fugly sounding system with terrible rasp! That asking "Why are we so cheap" nailed it when discussing the way many of our members mod their rides! If you don't have the $$ to do mods worthy of your ride, leave it alone! Lowering without Camber kits causing excessive tire wear, exhaust systems via muffler delete just devalue your rides...fact!

Agree on the cheap exhaust is cheap because its cheap argument. I've been thinking and reading up and i've pretty much decided to perform the muffler delete and add a resonator between the mid pipe and Y-pipe as it rasps really bad at high rpm judging from the sound clips and vids etc. If the drone is too bad, i could add branch resonators. (a cheaper custom alternative to heimholtz resonators)

thoughts?

If you are hell bent on changing the exhaust go the route Gary suggested. But my .02 is leave it alone, the G coupe exhaust stock is one of the sexiest factory exhausts out there. Especially in your case where the cars are fairly rare.

Well I wasn't really thinking of changing the stock exhaust that much. Its just bolting on a resonator and a custom pipe from the mid pipe to the tips. If i wanted to, I could just unmod the exhaust and go back to stock and everyone can tell me "I've told you so"
