I'm burning about a qt per every 1k miles. The oil stick shows half between max low line. Should I run 10 30 I been using 5 30.

Does this cause performance problems? I been doing some maintenance and did interior work. Got a decent system and planned on doing performance upgrades next year.

I thought it was 5 30 for these engines. I'm reading a lot of these cars burning around that much oil. I know it's not normal but new engine is not happening right now. I'm gonna change the valve covers, 1 is definitely leaking and hopefully that same valve cover is letting oil in thru the sparkplug. A lot of people also say these spark plug grommets leak.

What else can I do to minimize this. What oil is gonna help?what else could I do? Is there somewhere to send a oil sample ?

10w30 honestly burns much slower than 5w30 in mine. With 5w30 I'm almost a whole quart low after 1500mi and 10w30 I'm about 1/3qt low at 1500mi. (Castrol Magnatec syn blend). I used to run 20w50 conventional in it for about the first 3 yrs I owned it and never burned a damn drop.

20W50? Christ! That's super thick. Hopefully you live in a place where it's not too cold in winter. 20W50 doesn't churn too well in subzero temps.

Nah, San Diego. That was part of the reason for it actually.

I have respected your input here since I joined the forum back in 09 but you're the first person I have heard say this abut the OC in our motors. Why do you think he needs a new motor? Not trying to dispute your statement but just curious about the reasoning behind it.

My sedan has over 136K miles, burns about a quart and a half every 5000k miles and the motor is rock solid besides the OC. I've had it compression tested, dyno'd (no loss of power) and inspected by a very respected mechanic and it has passed all tests with flying colors. No valve cover leaks and no oil in any of the spark plug tubes. I've also never had to replace any engine components other than the PCV valve but expect cam/crank sensor issues sometime in the near future based on the law of averages.

Has anyone used this valve cover gasket and grommet set? https://g35driver.com/forums/engine-drivetrain-forced-induction/437299-r-d-factory-valve-cover-gasket-set.html

Please don't turn this into an online dispute. I wanna keep this a discussion on minimizing the oil consumption. So far from my search and from what my personal car needs.

1. valve cover gaskets and grommets......is r and d a reliable gasket grommet set?
2. Use 10 w 30 instead of 5 w 30..... I live in NJ. Weather goes from very cold to nice to very hot. Is this my best option?

3 . I'm looking into anywhere I can send a oil sample to see if they can tell me anything. I should do a compression and leak down test but I'm afraid the equipment I'm gonna get won't work correct.. I'm not spending 150 on the equipment I'd probably do harbor freight on these.

If I'm missing anything or am wrong about anything please chime in but don't start with the baby bs please. I don't have the patience for that and that type of stuff has kept me from this site.

yes. I'm running that set now. No leaks, no issues. Great cost saver. I recommend it.

If his motor is burning the recommended weight oil at a pace of a quart every 1000 miles, it most likely means that his rings are worn as has been the case on many VQ35's... particularly the rev-up variant. You can keep adding oil as you go to keep it running, but once the rings start leaking oil this bad you get lots of combustion deposits blowing-by the rings and into your oil which contaminates the oil and severely minimizes its ability to lubricate the various engine internals. It also often makes the problem become worse at an increased rate since the oil not only is being depleted quickly, but also not lubricating the piston walls as well due to said contamination and the fact that it's constantly being pushed away from the cylinder walls by compression pressure and into the case.

There's a huge difference between a quart of oil ever 5K miles and a quart every 1K. Half a quart to a quart every 1K is considered normal on many cars....1 quart every 5K is grounds for a bottom end rebuild or a new motor as per the official Infiniti/Nissan Oil Consumption TSB that was issued on these cars when they were still under warranty. There have been thousands of VQ's motors replaced over the years under that oil consumption TSB on Rev-Up variants of the VQ35.

Obviously he'd want to look into other things that could be causing oil loss such as leaky gaskets or valves, etc... but if it's being burnt through the exhaust at that rate, it's most likely worn rings and a block that needs a re-bore and hone.

My exhaust is not abnormal colors so I'm hoping it's a combo of valve cover and spark grommet. I'm also gonna put a catch can and change to 10 30.

Will 10 40 help?

You usually only see it when it's extremely bad out the tailpipe and mostly under load. Have a buddy drive behind you and give it some gas fairly hard and see if any smoke comes out the pipes.

I actually saw a dude the other day riding around in an FX35 that was smoking like hell while I was riding my motorcycle. I pulled up next to him and asked him how many miles he had on his car because it was smoking a lot and he said only about 80K and he has to add oil every week.

How much would it be to rebuild an engine? Should be less than a new one. I saw a few rebuilt on ebay for 2200.
