manual or automatic

Hi,
I am going to the dealer soon and still not sure whether to go for the automatic or manual. Now by getting a g35, i feel that i am almost obligated to go for manual and thats what my friends keep telling me, but I never drove stick in my life and barely know how to work it. A friend of mine got the '04 g35 automatic and said that was a big mistake..

Now I don't want to mess up the transmission or anything, any first time manual drivers here that got accustomed to it quick? Is there a long learning curve? I mean I want to drive the car and have fun, I don't want to look like an idiot and stall in traffic.

Thanks for any suggestions/opinions/comments.

You can shift the automatic manually too.

If you've never driven a mannual in your life, I would highly recommend learning on a car that is not as powerful or expensive as the G. Talking to friends who purchased mannuals without prior stick knowledge, they said the first couple of months were the worst of their lives. They hated having to get in their car every day and be afraid of grinding the gears, again, or stalling in the middle of an intersection, again. If I were in your shoes, I'd either buy the automatic (which still is a blast to drive), or find a less powerful, broken-in mannual to learn on while you wait the 3 months for your ordered 05-6MT to get to the States from Japan.

keep you old car for a little if you can, so you can drive that and learn to drive the new car when there isn't traffic out and you can do it at your leisure. I drove stick for like 20 minutes in my friend's car total before getting my G so I sucked but whatever, I learned and now I love it. And I think you will be really disappointed later if you don't get it, cause a lot of people are.

previously i traded in a manual prelude for an auto 05. do i regret not getting a manual G35 ?Hmm prob not i was baseing my purchase on performance #'s and the auto was .5 seconds behind in the 60 and 1/4 I think it took the lead. however im having alot of problems using the manumatic , I keep reaching for neutral , think im in manual mode and throw it in neutral, etc you get the idea.

my first manual car was dropped off to my work I was able to drive home without riding the clutch and doubt i even stalled it once. the trick for me was to know gears wont grind if i let off the clutch slowly, however knowing if i rode the clutch it would damage it. learning manual was a piece of cake. IMO its just because people are either scared or just dont have the dexterity to ... know when to shift, how to release the clutch , know how much gas to give and change gears all at the same time while driving.

which should you get... dunno my answer would be based on your answers...

city driving (stop and go) consists of how much of the pie ?
how old are you ?
Did you buy the G because of its performance or because of its luxury and performance ?
Stick shifts get in the way of entertaining ladies... do you plan on entertaining ladies ?

either stick or auto there is no wrong answer... it just needs to be tailored to your lifestyle !

ppp

Well for G, I say Manual if you want to speed up and have fun. But if you want comfort and hold your girl friend's hands like me ^^ I would go for auto.

yeah, i agree with the above post. if you have experience with a stick, you MUST get the 6mt. but if you've never driven a stick before, a g35 is NOT a good car to be your first manual car. too much power and too nice of a car. of course, it's all up to you. if i were you, try getting one of your friends to teach you in the next couple weeks in their car. if you feel comfortable with it, then get the 6mt.

i've always driven a stick before i got the 03 5at coupe when they first came out. i couldn't wait for the 6mt and just got what they had in stock. i always regretted it and finally hunkered down and got a 05 6mt coupe. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE STICK. but i can only imagine driving the 6mt with no prior stick-shift experience...it may be a bit daunting.

Go Manual

Dude you have to go for the manual. I am sure you know the concept of standard shifting and what not. SO... if you have some coordination its not hard to get it after a day. Learning on another car would be good, but when you switch over to the G its going to be a would of difference and it will almost be like learning again. So like i said, if you have the concept down go manual. That shifting crap on the automatic will never compare. Plus if you want to be able to put all of those 298 ponnies onto the pavement the fastest way possible the the 6MT is the only choice.

i've only driven manual 3 times in my life and i just bought a manual 05 coupe. its hard in the beginning but you'll get used to it. ya i say just get a hold of a manual car and practice for a day or two. if someone could teach you that'd be great. if you dont have any daily traffic problems it'll be a fun car.
