Oil change interval...03 6mt with 168k miles

So I changed the oil 6 months ago and in 6 months I've driven about 900 miles (my 3rd car)

So I put conventional valvoline oil.

I bought the car from my best friend who only used conventional oil last year at 165k miles.

I am thinking of using synthetic high mileage oil.

Should I wait and drive or change now since it's already been 6 months?

I know conventional oil Can go bad even if you don't drive (is that true someone told me)

A car with that kinda mileage, it's always had dino oil I suggest you keep using it! Switching to a synthetic might cause you to have leaks. Not driving your G a lot and using conventional oil, change it when it looks dirty!

Semi synthetic is pretty much the same across the board. We'd recommend conventional oil because that is what your car is used to.

Changed at the oil change interval, conventional still protects the engine so no worries there.

The 6 month oil change recommendation is generally BS. If you drive your car that little, change it every 12 to 15 months or maybe 2000 to 2500 miles. Although since non-syntgetic oil is so cheap, you could change it early without much cost if you want to play it safe.

With low mileage change the oil twice a year.

Although I used to change my own oil I no longer do so. I only let the dealer do it.
If you are only doing two oil changes per year it might be a consideration for you. They wash and vacuum my vehicle and do a complete inspection. At the last oil change the dealer gave me the mm thickness of my brake pads on all four wheels. I often receive coupon discounts in the mail.

Don't try and reinvent the wheel, if you were on conventional, stay on conventional. Read the owners manual, Infiniti explicitly recommends mineral oil and no additives. My '03 has had only conventional oil changes from Infiniti bulk oil from Wakefield Canada (Castrol) since new, the dealer does not recommend synthetic in any early VQ even though it's $50 extra in their coffers.

Somewhere in that high mileage coupe motor is "Crud Build Up" from 168K miles of using dino oil! Synthetic with it very high detergent will eventually clean out those many miles of build up...you've made your decision hope it ends well!

All modern oils have various detergents (unless explicitly stated on the packaging that they don't)... not just synthetics. This is the reason you don't use them in old motors from the mid 1950's or earlier, because the sudden introduction of any detergent oil can free up too much sludge and result in blockages. This won't happen on a well maintsined car built within the past 30 or so years.

It's not the detergents that cause problems anyways. It's mostly the increased likelihood of oil burning as a result of smaller synthetic oil particles being pushed past worn rings or leaking out past some seals and gaskets.

So far so good. Car seems more preppy.

My mechanics (only services Infiniti and Nissans for over 39 years) said do the syn once and if it leaks replace with conventional. He said not a big deal. He's seen both ways that it starts leaking or nothing happens. Only time will tell. I'll check oil every 100 miles and let's see what happens.
