How many fuel pressure dampers?

Hey guys,

I'm troubleshooting some abysmal fuel economy on my 2003 G35 sedan, along with a strong gas smell from under the hood on startup. Currently, I'm wondering about the fuel damping.

I was looking at RockAuto's catalog, and there are fuel dampers listed as "left" and "right." Do our engines have two fuel dampers, or just one?

Here's what I'm looking at: http://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/i...re+damper,6120

Thanks as usual.

If you smell fuel under the hood then find the leak! Should be fairly obvious just look for the wet spot.

Trying to, haven't seen any wetness yet...I'll look again this weekend. Thing is, I only smell it for a minute on startup.

Just realized I posted this in the Coupe forum instead of Sedan, but I guess it's the same fuel system, yeah?

Yep it's the same, I would have a second person turn the key from OFF to ON to cycle the fuel pump (repeat as many times as it takes to find the leak) while you peek around with an inspection mirror and a good flashlight.

I believe there are two of them. The one on the left is easy to see and the other one is hidden underneath somethings I believe.

Cool, thanks! I ordered brand-new dampers and installed them. Going to stick the Z1 spacer on today, then let's see how she runs!

Too bad Z1 didn't make a lower plenum for the revup I like their prices better than motordyne.

did the dampers solve the leak smell? in my 03 coupe I had injectors that were dribbling/clogged. I rebuilt them and installed new dampers and it cleaned right up.

I had a little leak from one the passenger-side damper, but nothing too bad. What it did solve is the rumbling sound - engine sounds a lot smoother. However, I'm still suffering from the fuel economy issues. Goddamn, my 545i has 100 more HP and gets better fuel economy than this engine.

G35 sedan w/ too much money in mods
^^That's exactly what my old G was, and still is, getting. Averaged closer to 15 in town but I never got much better than that in the 8 years I owned the car and the year it's been my girlfriend's. Highway miles suffered a tiny bit when I went to the 3.5 diff on the AT, damn motor runs at 3200 RPM's at 80. My GTO purrs right along at about 1800 in 6th gear at 80 though and gets better highway mileage than the G does. In town not so much lolol.......

I'm getting about 13 combined, 20-40 miles per day, 50/50 city/hwy.

Hey guys, been a while. So the car would throw a P0171 lean code after idling for 20 minutes or so, and was noticeably missing. The last two things I could think of were the MAF and fuel injectors, and just swapped the MAF for an OEM Hitachi MAF0099. Now it's running pretty great...I'll post details in the other thread. We'll see if fuel economy improves after I run this tank down.
