Coupes high priced for little HP
according to your rationale ( g35 too expensive for "so little" hp ), then many, many cars would also fall under your category--e.g. lexus sc $60k, acura rl $50k, acura nsx $90K!!!!, ford thunderbird deluxe $38K, Porsche boxter S $56k, lotus elise (190 hp!!!) $42K, and bmw z4 $42K to name just a few....there's many more examples. those i listed all have under 300 hp but cost more than our coupe.
now, you do the math and draw your own conclusions on value according to price relative to hp. seriously though, if you're only into power, by all means, get an american muscle car. american automakers have always been known to offer high powered, cheap cars....not sure on the quality but who cares, right? it's all about the power: )

I loved the G35 coupe when i first set my eyes on it when i was 15 years old. It was always my dream to have a G as my ride. It is today... I dont like american cars either i was just trying to make a comparsion in the G35 price range in the HP ratio.

If you believe that our car is overpriced, then go get that GTO. Our car is actually underpriced. It's main target was the BMW 3-series, which is $10-17 higher. Infiniti had to introduce the G35 as a performance & handling value. It will keep raising the price as credibility and features improve.

I really don't see how you can compare the Pontiac to an Infiniti. Apples and oragnes. Maybe compare it to the Mustang, Neon, or Gremlin (lol). Compare the G to a 3-series, Audi, or benz. Drive them and you'll see, and come out with a BIG grin after you get out of the G. Just my 0.02
Specifically speaking about the GTO, I really have to wonder if people who like the car have ever seen it in person. You have to look really, really hard to tell the difference between the GTO and the recently retired Cavalier. The car really looks ridiculous for the price GM is asking for it. Maybe its just me, but I also think the EVO and WRX don't exactly count as really lookers, either.
I test drove my 04 G35C prior to test driving an 04 GTO in late Nov 04. The GTO had a brutal thrust to it and a sweet exhaust note. I tried taking a curve like I had with the G and was disgusted with it. When I brought it back to the dealer he offered it to me for $24,500. It was the last one he had and he almost begged me to take it knowing I was considering the G. Yea, the payments would be lower but my straight line days are over. Taking the twisties is my fun.
Ok, lets get a few things straight:
1.) The GTO may cost 35 large, but you don't get sunroof, dual zone climate, navi, or heated seats. That's why I didn't buy a GTO.... However, I've heard that the 04's have been leaving lots for closer to 26k, which is probably the right price for that car.
2.) Pontiac's quality is not THAT bad. Personally, my G35 has had more glitches/problems and visits to the dealer in the first few months of ownership, than my Pontiac GTP did in 7 years of ownership. My GTP has never stranded me. My G on the other hand, has died on me 3 times so far. So far nothing serious, so it doesn't bother me, but don't make blanket statements like Pontiacs will die on you in a few months.
3.) To confuse a GTO with a Cavalier, you really have to be blind. I admit, that the GTO looks a lot like the 97-03' Grand Prix from the front, but only because it has the same type of recessed twin kidney grills. Everything else about the front is completely different. It also does not look like a cavalier in any shape or form. Some people have made snide comments that from the side it looks like a cavalier, but please... Park it next to a cavalier, and you'll see that it doesn't look like it at all. I think the only reason people may think it looks like a cavalier, is because the side profile of the spoiler looks similar to the one offered on the Z24 cavalier.
Kinda like how people said the Scion tC looks like a G35. Sure, I might be able to see how it slightly resembles a G35, but it doesn't really look anything like the G35 at all...
4.) The GTO doesn't really handle THAT bad. It's still 55/45 balanced, and it's still RWD. It just that it comes equipped from the factory with pretty crappy tires.
5.) Why even bother discussing mods? You say get a used 350Z, then throw on 10k in mods like a TT/SC, and say byebye GTO. What?! Have you seen what an LS1/LS2 engine with 10k in mods can do?
But anyways, I don't really think the G35 is overpriced. As a previous poster said, there is more to the story than just raw power. An EVO is 30 grand, but the money is all in the motor, as the interior doesn't scream $30,000.

Maybe people who are intimately familiar with GM Chevy's and Pontiacs can tell the finer points, but the cars REALLY look like each other.

These pictures are taken at different distances, so they may make the car look to be the same size, when one is sentra sized, and the other altima/maxima sized)
Way to go avs007! Nothing like visual proof!
. People buy cars for different reasons. If good ole American muscle and torque is what you're into, the GTO is awesome! If a combination of sophistication, styling and reasonable power is what you're after, the G wins hands down for the price!!
