replacing body panels... Afraid of paint matching mishaps... any experience?
Hello, new here. Have had my G35 for about a year.
Unfortunately, someone swiped the front driver's side corner of my car a month or so ago.
The damage was quite minor, brackets all seem in place. Looks like I just need a driver's side front fender (sheet metal over the front driver's side wheel) and a new bumper.
I've got a silver 03 coupe. I found a seller on ebay with good ebay rep I'm thinking of getting the bumper from. You provide a color code, and they paint it to match.
My worry is that perhaps it won't match, because my car is 15 years old... Is this right, or would a color code match work well?
tl;dr: is my car going to look weird if I get a brand new painted part?
Haven't found a good lead for the driver's side fender yet, still looking... sadly, no junk yards in the surrounding several hundred miles (I'm in Austin, TX) seem to have a couple G35, and from what I read the sedan panels aren't interchangeable.
See if you can just buy it unpainted and have the best body shop in town shoot the thing. Also, don't he be afraid to call around to local body shops about that fender. Those guys do this for a living and have ALL the best hook ups
I am considering trying to save the bumper on second thought. Maybe it's salvageable? Have never tried touch up paint, but considering trying (or perhaps just sanding it down and painting it fresh)...
As for the fender, only two fenders used I found, one had really low quality pictures that kind of looked like there might be a scratch (shady, and had turned off ability to contact him, and had only a 95% rating on ebay... staying away from that one), the other looked great, except for some scratches on the bottom... neither are great candidates.
If you were in my position, would you get a fresh painted one, or just wait around hoping for a used one to show up somewhere?
Local painter quoted $250, but told me it probably wouldn't match since it's a 15 year old car. Thought the price sounded a little high, too... that makes it nearly a $500 repair for parts.
