Bad clutch?
Bad clutch?
Hello all,
I bought a 6MT 2004 coupe a month or two ago, my dad is currently driving it since I haven't learned how yet. I think my clutch is going out, but I haven't been able to test in high gear on a highway since I don't have a plate on the car (OBD doesn't have enough miles in drive cycle to pass emissions, which is a registration requirement so I am working on getting temporary tags but it will be a while). The car is at 161k and has stock clutch. When I have ridden in the car with my dad, it has driven fine but he says he has to press the clutch a ways to the floor before it disengages, though I have heard these cars usually release pretty quickly. Also I smell something burning frequently when he is driving the car. I am not sure how much of this to blame on my dad (says he is experienced driving manual but judging by his shifting he is not as fluent as he says he is) and how much to blame on an old and possibly worn clutch. The only reason I ask now instead of after getting it temporary tags/learning to drive is because it may be a while before I can get the car on the road and I would like to do as much as I can to get it in good shape before I do more damage to it. I have also heard the flywheel can get worn too, should I try to get that replaced as well? Thanks!
Edit: Shoot just realized posted this in the wrong thread. Anyone know how to move it? First post sorry lol

I don't have an answer as a 5AT owner, but this isn't a terrible sub-forum for your post. There have been much much worse...trust me.
Welcome to the G world. Quite a first car. Be careful; while hardly the fastest thing out there, it's still a powerful automobile compared to 95% of the rest. Look good; be good.

This thread is fine in the coupe subforum. Here's what I suggest doing, get out on the highway going about 60mph, shift to 6th gear. Mash the throttle WOT and watch the tach, does the needle jump quickly like it's not synced to the speedometer? If so then yes your clutch is slipping and needs replacement. A burning clutch smell is pretty unmistakable and there's a really good chance that's what you're smelling.

If you're over 160K miles on the original clutch it's a good time to change it no matter what. I'd also change the slave and master clutch cylinders and the flywheel. It's going to cost a pretty penny so start saving now if you don't have the funds readily available.
