We just purchased 2006 Infiniti G35 5 speed with 101,000 miles on it. We had the car inspected at an Infiniti dealership prior to purchase. No issues noted. The car has run absolutely perfect and starts first time. We've only put 250 miles on the car since we purchased it. Today, we made several short trips without any problems. When we returned home and was ready to put the car in the garage after unloading groceries, the car cranked and tried to start but then won't start. It acts like it wants to start but no ignition. The tank is at 1/4. I put 5 gallons of gas in to see if that was the issue. No change. No warning lights indicating any issue.

What should I be looking for before I have it towed to a service center.

 

No check engine light?

Is your fuel pump working?

 

Sounds like crank/cam sensor. (forgot need to go knock the dust off my memory books)

 

None of the lights indicate a problem. I placed the IFxd device on the vehicle and there is no errors noted. I cannot hear the fuel pump due to road noise outside our house. I'm thinking it may be suspect. The car turns over and I got a very short ignition fire then nothing.

 

Spray some starter fluid into your intake while cranking the engine. If it starts, then your fuel is the problem. Possibly fuel pump.

 

Does your tach move when cranking the engine? If not then it's probably the crank sensor.

If it does move when cranking then pull and inspect all your spark plugs.

However it will probably end up being a cam sensor if it's not the crank sensor. Only use Genuine Nissan OEM or Hitachi sensors, other brands don't play nice or quickly fail.

EDIT: Since it catches a few times but won't actually start I'm thinking it's probably a cam sensor or possibly the fuel pump. Take off the back seat (super easy, lift up the front edge, there is a metal loop on each side that goes into a little plastic hook, detach those and pull the seat forward, no tools needed) and use a hammer and thump around lightly on the flange for the fuel pump. Usually a stuck pump and be freed by some percussive maintenance, it will also let you HEAR if the pump is working when you turn the key to on. If it's still really loud then take a screwdriver, put the metal tip on the flange for the pump, put the HANDLE END (not the pointy end) on your ear and it works like a stethoscope and you will easily hear that pump even in a noisy shop environment.

 

How is the battery? I've found out that some G35s develop slow drains due to the CD player or radio. The battery may be weak due to being drained often.
