Good afternoon ladies and gents. I am sure there is a thread somewhere buried in Timbuktu here, but I wanted to share a few things I came across when tackling this job. I had a seepage along the DS from valve cover gasket and well as cylinder # 6 spark plug tube, so it was time for a replacement.
For those who don't know, the spark plug tube seals are irreplaceable, they are built into the plastic valve covers. There are some people who have successfully mcguyvered the seals out by cutting them and replacing them with some newer model civic ones. I said F that and found a set of valve covers brand new on Amazon for $90.
Tip: Take a picture of every single connector you are taking apart for future reference. especially when it comes to the passenger side wiring harness. Each coilpack connector wire is numbered on the harness loom from the factory, but that white sticker just crumbled on me so also use blue painters tape to label each one for peace of mind. I have included a picture for reference.
I am not going to post the full how to guide because there are a bunch out there, I will say removing the wiring harness out helps a **** ton for room. The two hoses connected to the throttle body are coolant lines, so beware (you do NOT need to removed the throttle body for this job). I clamped mine off, but you can also plug them. I replaced my upper and lower plenum gaskets. They are metal and a lot of people reuse theirs. They are cheap enough so might as well.
So here comes the lessons learned. I didn't have a misfire or any codes before I started this job. I was getting a bad misfire when I started my car up the first time. I forgot to clean the oil out of the spark plug tube on cylinder 6. Cleaned it out and started it up. Still misfiring. After a long search, I found out about the wiring harness and how it can be easy to mix up the order. I switched cylinder 1 and 3. Bam! No misfire but as soon as I took her out I get the SLIP and VDC OFF light and CEL. P0345 camshaft position sensor circuit A bank 2. Let me tell you I about lost my mind looking this stuff up because there is this reference of right and left...well which freaking right or left?!! Almost no direct reference to the passenger side or driver side.
Sorry if this is reposted info, but I had a very hard time finding this stuff on the web.
So I also noticed people referencing the cam position sensor as straight and bent. Some people saying the bent one is on the driver side and vice versa and that there is only one on each side. WELL here is the deal. I have a rev up motor and I learned that there are 4 freaking cam position sensors; circuit A is the intake side (closest to centerline of the vehicle) and circuit B is exhaust side (more toward fenders). I reached back and felt that one of the connectors I took off was the cam position sensor circuit A bank 2 ( driver side more centerline sensor) I didn't click it in all the way. ..Yes I am an idiot and almost spent $160 on a sensor I didn't need. I attached the rev up motor diagram for cam position sensors for those who are wondering.
