Are Plenum Spacers Safe?
Are Plenum Spacers Safe?
Hey everyone,
I just purchased a Z1 plenum spacer along with a Stillen High Flow Intake and I知 very excited to upgrade my G.
I知 a little nervous about the Plenum Spacer, are these relatively safe upgrades? Does it put more wear and tear on the engine? I知 excited for an affordable upgrade that痴 gonna increase power but I知 nervous this could do more damage in the long run.
I知 also wondering if I should do an ECU reset once I install the spacer and the intake?
All opinions wanted! Thank you!

No extra wear or tear, 100% safe.
Reset the ECU, throttle closed position, and the idle air recalibration steps in the FSM section EC - Engine Controls under "basic service procedures".

On these cars, whenever you unplug the throttle body, you have to command the ECU to recalibrate and learn the correct throttle body settings.
An ECU reset is a must when installing a plenum spacer. They make a noticeable difference, you will be happy with the results!

Yep exactly as he said, when you unplug the TB the ECM must have it's position recalibrated next time you plug it in. Super easy to do but if you DON'T then the car won't run right and usually goes straight to limp mode.
Turn the key ON, turn the key OFF, wait 10 seconds and you will HEAR the throttle motor operate for a split second. Just have the hood popped beforehand because I personally can't hear it with the hood closed, some people can.
After you hear the throttle motor recalibrate then you're good to start the engine.
Idle Air Volume is also MANDATORY when you install a plenum spacer, it's a lot easier to do with the Android app Nissan Datascan 2 (bluetooth OBD2 adapter like the one from BAFX works perfect on this platform). I prefer NDS2 for the idle air because you can actually SEE the electronic state of the vehicle to make sure it's actually ready to perform the test (electronic load switch OFF inside the IPDM, not actually visible through normal OBD2) then you just have to push a button on the screen to make the recalibration happen.
The pedal dance method works also though, but you have to be 100% sure your vehicle meets all the MANDATORY requirements in the FSM before doing the recalibration, otherwise your idle will be off.
The idle air volume relearn might seem like it's difficult, it's not. Basically it's battery charged, engine at operating temp, transmission in park or neutral (even a 6MT, can't push the clutch it MUST be in neutral with the clutch released), if it's an automatic then the tranny must be warmed up (there's a temp sensor so yes it has to be warmed up), ALL ELECTRONICS TURNED COMPLETELY OFF (stereo, AC controls OFF not just fan at low speed, all lights off including the trunk must be closed, doors must be closed, nothing plugged into the power sockets like a phone charger, etc.). Steering wheel must be pointed perfectly straight forward, DO NOT PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL it will turn on the tail lights.
You can set the parking brake if you prefer, it makes no difference in the state of the electric load switch.

I understand the ECU reset procedure, but the idle relearn is also it痴 own separate procedure?
