Cranking but no vroom
Cranking but no vroom
Hey fellow G's. I'm hoping you can help my boy out. Just got his G35 and was tooling around. Downshifted a bit early and pushed the RPM up. After that she sputtered and then would only crank but wouldn't start. We knew the plugs and valve cover gasket needed to be replaced and we hoped that was the issue. After replacing plugs, covers and gaskets we got her back together and still nothing. Tested the fuel pump and that seems to be good as well. Hoping maybe someone here can help point us in a troubleshooting direction.

I already checked all of the fuses that I think would cause the car not start and there all fine
Does the tach move when cranking the engine? Should move up to about 200rpm.
EDIT: Also, are you sure it's not just out of gas, the gas gauge is notorious for failing and showing 1/2 tank when it's actually 100% empty.

Thank you for the feedback. Being a new car to me wouldn't have thought that slightly over 1/4 tank would be bone dry. #embarrasing. Thank you again for the hint and feedback.
Gauge cluster is usually the culprit, but you can take a look at Cleric's diagnostic tips here:

And when you have time remove the cluster and test for the bad area. Many people replace their whole cluster, but with some patience it can be fixed yourself.
Otherwise it's a fuel sender. Also described in the link.
At least for now, your problem is solved, but to prevent running out of fuel in the future, maybe take a stab at it.
