Average cost for engine swap
Average cost for engine swap
Just curios on what to expect if I go this route.... My G been dead for the past 9 months and its always one issue after another, It has 175K+ miles so might be time anyways. I'm in Austin, TX. Some shops I called wont touch it since I already worked on it trying to fixing the engine so might now just look for a swap.
Did you disassemble it? Is the timing chain still on it?
Urban's price sounds about right, which engine does yours have? If it's just a basic DE you can pick those up pretty cheap, DE rev-up is significantly more expensive. HR is sort of between the two but closer to the normal DE in price since they're becoming a LOT more plentiful for both salvage yards as well as JDM importers.
Personally I almost always go the JDM import route when swapping motors, they have an excellent history and reputation of being solid motors and you know it's not going to have hardly any wear because their yearly vehicle inspection are INSANE in Japan.
Every other year (after the car is... 3 years old I think?) it's required to be inspected, no body damage whatsoever, every single part of the vehicle must be functioning as per OEM, tailpipe emissions cannot exceed 1% more than stock, and the cost of their vehicle registration basically doubles every time it's done so it's just too expensive to keep the vehicle on the road. I think the average age of Japanese vehicles is less than 10 years old because it starts costing several thousand dollars to register the vehicle. Plus the average yearly miles on the vehicles in Japan are significantly lower (like half) what we drive here in America which is 13.5k miles yearly I think.
So they ship the engines over here to America because we give zero F's about most of that stuff, we just want a cheap motor that has roughly 60k miles on it.
Lots of reputable importers around the country, I live in Washington State and usually buy my JDM's from Northwest JDM Motors out of Sacramento if they have what I need in stock, they only charge $200 delivery up to Washington.
You could call around to a few repair shops, tuner shops, etc in your area and see if they have any recommendations for importers they use.

JDM all the way..otherwise you are looking at getting some unknown "quality" engine from LKQ or the like.. and driving it with fingers crossed...everyday...
We just went through this.
I found a pro shop to do it.
They charged me 16 hrs @$125
$4600 fluids, motor, labor...but it was a premier shop.

fwiw the jdm engine really isn’t a “clean bill of health solution” either. They aren’t guaranteeing quality of bearings and seals, and we trust these importers that they aren’t sneaking engines in from local cars / etc.
IMO rebuild is the only way.
good luck op
I just did one of these last month with a friend of mine and that's pretty much spot on. We got the engine for $1200 and went ahead and did the timing chain, valve covers and some of the other common stuff before we installed it. I think the total cost was around $1600 and it took a weekend.

As far as JDM goes..if reputable shops are using them over local pulls..that says a lot....
And the question was about engine swaps..not builds..

Yeah tried working in with a neighbor and it was just problem after another. Just want to bite the bullet and write a check to get a swap.
JDM engine zone.
If you have a local infiniti indy shop, I would talk to them first about where they source their engines.
I also see rebuilt engines are out there! Not sure about the co$t as they want my email address.
