crappy mileage

i did a search. and I now know that i have horrible gas mileage. i am getting about 12mpg. i do not beat on my coupe at all. i am very soft on it actually. i took it in to the dealer and suggested that i am running "rich" as my search results stated. the tech said he ran the necessary tests and everything is within "specification". he then went on to tell me that my g only has 5k on it and that it is probably cause it is still new (7months-ish). he said to drive it a few thousand more miles and that it should get alot better. is this total crap or what? any ideas on what i can do??? thanks.

I'm not sure what your issue is but my car (05 coupe 6MT) only has 2700 miles on it and I'm regularly seeing 18-21 mpg.

Hopefully you get it sorted out.

That's sounds about right buddy. The tech is not pulling your leg on that suggestion. Until I hit the 2500 mile mark my car was eating a lot of gas and felt slow. After hitting that mark my mileage gradually went up and the power just increase almost overnight. One more suggestion don't baby your car to much you have to let it loose once in a while. Don't be afraid to punch it every now and then. Everytime us G drivers here in Socal go on a canyon run and we just drive the living crap out of our cars. There is nothing wrong with making the engine scream in fact the car is just begging to be driven that way. It can handle almost everything that you throw at it. Besides what did you expect as far as gas mileage is concerned? You want a V6 power and Civic gas comsumption? Not going to happen with this engine. 19 - 22 mpg is about average after you get some more miles on your car. Goodluck!

thanks for the write up, and i'm not expecting huge numbers but about 11 or 12 mpg is pathetic.

you think i need more miles than 5k on my g to see better mpg???

You're not using 91+ octane? that may be your problem....i use 93, i have 1500 miles and average about 18mpg. With 12mpg i would be pissed.

that doesn't sound right at all, for the last 4 days i have been doing nothing but stop and go traffic...not one point of straight driving more than 1 mile and i still have 16.5mpg, once i go to school (once a week, 13 miles steady speed) i get up to 18 or so mpg

RU Sure you're math is right. I do only city driving mostly to work an back. I floor it often because I cannot help it and I get 14-15 mpg. Not great, but a little better than what you are seeing. I have always got the same mpg since I bought the car brand new and I now have about 4k on the motore.

It's not unheard of to get lousy mileage until the engine breaks in more, perhaps more than 5-7k, although it seems unlikely that you would see a big spike at that point. And 11-12 does seem low. Are you sure you're counting correctly? Are you dividing the number of miles on the odo by the number of gallons it takes to refill the tank? Also, what kind of driving do you do and how far do you go? For instance, my daily commute is 6 miles of stop and go backroads, and I get about 15-15.5 mpg. I only have 1800 miles on my 04.5 6MT coupe.
