I do not have experience with both, only the 8500 X50. The thing a lot of us do not like about the Solo S2 Cordless is the fact taht it is battery-powered. Escort says that the way the unit manages the battery power, performance does not decrease with battery life. But as with everything battery-operated, performance does decrease as the batteries near their "end".
At the very least if our little theory does not pan out, if you hard-wire it to your car (which is fairly easy to do), you are not doomed to replacing batteries for the life of the detector and the unit turns on with the car, and turns off with the car.

Although a cordless will never be as effective as a corded model the November Autoweek reviewers loved the Solo. You can read the full review from a link at the Passport site but the consensus of all the models reviewed, mostly corded models - "When all was said and done, one unit emerged as the staff's favorite: Escort's Solo S2.

trust me, you'll be better off hardwiring an x50. escort can claim all they want that the solo's performance doesnt degrade. the fact is, it WILL degrade if the batteries are low. sure, the wireless aspect can be attractive... but hardwiring an x50 is just as convenient, plus you would not have to worry about turning the x50 on or off.

I know you didn't ask about the V1, but I thought I'd mention that it is permanently upgradeable. When a newer gen V1 comes out, all you have to do is send in your old unit with $150 and you get the new one with all the whizbang stuff. Over the long term, it's a better investment. Just a FYI.

someone should combine the x50's LED display with directional arrows. now THAT would make you rich.
anyhoo, hard-wiring an x50 is very simple. just do it yourself. IMO more peace of mind that it was done right, plus the satisfaction of upgrading your car with your own two hands. i have the URL of a bunch of pics for a walkthrough, someone posted it here a while ago. i'll post the URL tomorrow when i'm back at work.
