6MT feedback

Picked up a fully loaded DG g35c today!

However, the little handle on the passenger side (for the rear seat) broke after couple of uses. I'm going to have it fixed this week. The shifter vibrates, navigation processor speed seems to be a little slow but acceptable. Upgraded bose sounded exactly like the others said. Leather seats look great and very comfortable. Homelink works well. Suspension is on the stiff side but it's probably a lot better than Z. @80mph engine runs about 2700rpm in 6th gear. I tried to release clutch without hitting gas on first gear but it stalled.. i guess my skill sucks.. I probably have to release the clutch slower.

Engine sounds great. Handling is great. Now I have to practice how to drive a stick. Hopefully by the time I get a hang of it the car will be broken in.
Edited by peilien on 11/25/02 12:29 AM.

Re: 6MT feedback

Brembo is awesome.. very smooth and responsive.
Shifter vibrate all the time unless neutral.

Clutch feels good however i'm a new stick driver! so dont take my word for it!

I tried opening the sunroof and i was pretty impressed how quite it is with it tilted or open (very little wind noise).

Re: 6MT feedback

I've been driving standard trannies since 1985 and I've put a few miles on a G35 coupe so I guess I'm qualified to comment on this. The 6 spd coupe has short and precise throws and some might find it a bit notchy. It is not as buttery as Honda/Acura manuals but that is neither a positive or negative in my book. The clutch is light but a bit heavier than other Japanese offerings and no where near as heavy as the German manual trannies. The only negative I can find related to the manual tranny is it's placement of reverse which is to the right of the 6th gear. I would have preferred it be to the left of 1st instead.

Bose stereo system could definitely use some improvements. I found the highs a bit lacking and the bass to be muddy. I guess this could be due to the artificially warm sound that some audio affectionados were speaking of. It is still a better than average sound system and will find many happy and content users.

Re: 6MT feedback

I did not find the shifter to vibrate more than any other manual tranny. I think there is always some play in the shift gate therefore a bit vibration would come through. The Brembos stop great but I didn't find them to be dramatically different than most standard disc brakes.

Re: 6MT feedback

Have had my 6MT exactly one week (loaded DG/willow). It's a blast. I have never had a 6speed before and I feel like a kid getting his first bicycle with gears: its different....

The shift path is knobby, with (at least in my case) a really slim clear path between 1st and 2nd. I still can't consistently slap from 1st to 2nd without thinking about my hand position (even though the **** only has to move about 3 inches). The other upshift slots are clean and easy for fast shifting. 5th and 6th are to the right of the standard H on a 4-speed. The natural resting position of the shift **** is to the right of the H, with a light spring load needed to pull the **** to the left (for 1st and 2nd) and a heavier spring load to push to the right for 5th and 6th. I mention this because I don't like the assymetric spring load (my only complaint).

I also mention this because I find its going to take practice to do fast down-shifts. Single gear downshifts are easy (6-5,5-4,4-3, etc). Hitting 2nd is also easy from any gear, but the 5-3, 6-3 shifts are tricky because you are aiming for a thin slot in the middle, and that spring has been foxing me. For me, the shift needs a firm hand and you have to KNOW where that slot is: you ain't gonna get help from the box to guide you...

I don't pick up any unusual vibration in the shifter compared to other cars. Brembos are beautiful, with a tendency to grab a bit hard as the car slows. You have to ease off on the brake pedal more than normal as you come to a stop to keep your head from whiplashing forward as you halt.

Its a driver's car. You have to work it and there is a learning curve for high performance (at least for me).

Re: 6MT feedback

I originaly didn't like the position of the reverse either. However, i can tell you this. Coming from Audi S4 with a short shifter installed, the G's reverse is better positioned. After I installed the short shifter on the S(pretty much a must), the 1st and R were so close together that sometimes i actually put car into 1st instead of R. I had to constantly watch out for that. The bigest problem with G's pattern is posibility of sliding into 6th. However, if you do that, you will simply stall the car, rather then quickly move into the oposite direction from what you expect/intent.

Second note. Most newer German cars don't really have very heavy clutches. Of the last few i've driven:
TT has very light clutch
S4 about the same as G
330ci, a little lighter then G
GTI 1.8T, about the same as G

Re: 6MT feedback

Hey! I got mine two days ago and I get excited every time I have to drive. The car is absolutely awesome and I am completely satisfied. I Jumped from a 95 honda prelude to the G35 so I'm a happy camper. I read the posts and I've also noticed the vibrating shifter. It seems shakier than most other cars I've driven. And also I noticed a sound from the engine. I can hear a hint of a rattling sound in the lower rpm range. It's not easily identifiable but I suppose its suppose to sound that way... Did anyone notice this? Also in the manual it says you should break the car in for 1200 miles. I am very impatient and I am so ready to unleash. I talked to the the sales people and they said not too worry about it too much and that i can gun it ever so often. What do you think about this?
