Will 100% cotton bath towels scratch paint or wheels?

I always wondered but never tried. I have to buy some new towels for my car and kinda low on money to buy a bunch of new terry towels. I was considering taking a few 100% cotton towels and cutting them up into my own rags (cutting off the rough parts found on ends of towels). Will they scratch my paint or the lips of my wheels?

Sal Zaino advocates, "I prefer high quality name brand 100% Cotton Towels Large White Bath Size for washing, drying and polishing. I don't like sponges natural or synthetic or any wash mits, since they all can scratch." and he goes on as to brand, color, texture, etc.

YMMV

100% towels on regular paint might not scratch, but on our paint, it definitely will scratch. Infiniti paint is just ridiculously soft, so anything but the cleanest surface whiped off with the softest microfiber will scratch the paint.

Cotton itself will not scratch. But if you get any sand or other item in the weave it will scratch. The same goes for microfibre towels. Micros are the hot thing now because they can absorb more water than cotton (pound for pound).

I've been using 100% cotton towels on my '03 G since I bought it and don't have any scratches. If your low on funds 100% cotton towels will be fine just make sure you don't get any sand in the towels.

Lol you guys dont think Zaino knows what he is talking about? Whats this Infiniti paint is soft. Its really pretty hard, the prep is the reason for rock chips. I used PPG 2042 on my car, now thats soft. So soft in fact that I can colorsand it whenever I want. Ill be using 100% cotton towels only on my car.

Our old cotton towels go the garage for car washing. Admittedly they have been laundered a hundred times and are super soft by then, but in many years and 4-5 different cars I have experienced no scratching from them.
