Revving the Rice Rockets
Revving the Rice Rockets
Last weekend I left my nice, academic Big Ten University town where people drive new Infinitis, BMWs and Audis, and there are virtually no modified cars on the street. I went back to the bigger city my family is from and was just amazed at the number of modified Civics and, to a lesser extent, old style Eclipses I saw driving around. I had several "riced-out" roadsters pull up next to me and rev their engines at stop lights, but one experience really stands out. A brown POS late '90's Eclipse with a cracked body kit, exhaust, and busted windshield pulled up next to me late Friday afternoon. My fiance and I were in my '05 red 6MT with the windows down, and the racer boy in the Eclipse looks over and revs his engine.
At first the thing sounded like the engine might drop out of the car, but when he reached the top of his power band, his engine made a very distinct sound. It went from a typical revving sound to some type of hissing/pressure release-type sound as he either reached the peak of his rev or immediately after he let off the throttle and the engine began to decelerate.
I was wondering if anyone knew what this sound indicated - i.e. what mods he had done to make his engine do this. While I hate to admit that I've seen the move, it sounded just like the revving of the rice rockets at the beginning of 2 Fast 2 Furious. I am really curious as to what produces that sound.
Needless to say, the Eclipse was disappointed when I didn't blast out of the hole and charge into a road race with him - as if.

like Terribledevil said, those AWD GTS [or is it GTX?] Eclipses can be real nasty if done right [and sometimes if its just POSed together!] They come from the factory turboed...I guess you could say they are like the older STi or EVO of the 90s! Try finding him again and see if you wanna go to the track[since none of condone street racing...right
] So, I wouldnt call them "lil boy toys" or "little boy racers" because while we may make fun of the real POS ones, there are still some Civic, Eclipse, and Prelude modders that know what they are doing...know what they are doing enough to beat us...and thats what they live for...to beat cars that still cost half of what ours do! Just like we like to pull up to a M3 or C6 and wax them with a turbo or SC!
BOV won't give any HP gain its more like a safety thing that people with turbos use/ As you let off the throttle and the throttle plate closes the turbo is still spinning and producing boost.. that boost needs to go somewhere and it escaped through the blow off. Different valves make different noices...some whistle, and some make a distinct 'PSSHH' sound. They can be louder or softer...just depends on what you want. I think centrifical superchargers can also use BOV as the turbine is still spinning within themk even though are aren't on the gas. Did I help any?.....

it is a blow off valve. like homie mentioned there is a gsx and a gs-t. both are turbo charged 2nd gen eclipses, one is all wheel drive (x). They are both fast.
the eclipse comes with a stock BOV. I doubt it was aftermarket. Aftermarket BOVs are usually very loud and make a sharp piercing noise. Not just a psshhh sound.
what produces that sound is the turbo spooling up and then releasing the backpressure into the atmosphere. some turbo charged cars have by pass valves, which instead of releasing the air into the atmosphere, it relases back into the intake stream. you won't here this sound in that case.

Very much so. That PSSSH sound with a very light chirp described it exactly. It was quite a loud metallic shrill, so I don't know if it was stock.
And as far as the modded out Eclipses, Civics, and Preludes, I know they live for beating cars like the G. However, I wouldn't ever consider racing them. If I win, no big deal - I was supposed to win and I've beaten some crappy little car with a lot of aftermarket parts. If I lose, I'll feel very embarrased and have made his day.
Also, I didn't buy this car to race anyone else in the first place. I would have gotten the Z if I wanted to do any racing.

Change your plate to: "BLU BYU"

BB RICE would be a better plate. I dont drive that often, so I haven't had any experience about someone willing to race me. BTW, I would actually try to beat him lol... I know I shouldnt as if I lose, he will be happy as hell and that right there would promote RICE.
