Gents,
I had my car up on a lift to get it Tech Inspected for the track, and noticed that it had what I can only assume is a resonator after the cats and before the muffler. It is located closer to the muffler. Looks like a small muffler though.
What is it used for? Is it required for smog? Can it be removed (legally)?

I believe it's described as a resonator. In effect it's a small noise supressor and may affect the exaust noise tone (adversely) if removed.Originally Posted by Superman

I don't believe it has any affect on pollution control tho.

You're not going to get any gains, if you do it will be something like 1-2hp. Some people have done it and love it, but the majority complain about a raspy/ricey sound around 3-4k, drone the first 10min of driving, etc. In one word, it's going to make your exhaust louder but chances are you won't be happy with the sound. What some people have done is disconnect the muffler, not sure how it works but I've read a few positive comments about how it affects the exhaust note.

If you want the gain in whp, then get Y-Pipe. I'm not sure if that will help but I did a lot o research about Y-Pipe. Y-Pipe can gain hp and tq (depending on what manufacture you are getting) plus you'll get nice growl as well..
