Words of wisdom^.

I'm still pretty set on sacrificing ultimate HP for the sake of a N/A, buzz-saw of an engine. I've been the fastest in town before. As cool/flattering as it is, it had it's downsides. This one doesn't have to be the fastest, just fast and reliable in 100+ temps.

I've made less work for me in the past, so the G should be sufficient.

If I could do it all over again I would probably just buying a faster more expensive car, but this was not planned. It kinda just happened. I got to admit it has been fun though.

An M6? You're in the military, yeah? Is Booooz good looking AND rich? Where are you gonna get $90K?
You would be suprised what a year or two in a combat zone could do for you financially. Lot's of money and no where to spend it over there.

If you are in the military your pay is tax-free along with the extra pay you get for being there. I know I've been there 4 times!!

You're telling me a typical soldier (I have no clue what rank we're talking about here) makes enough to afford a $90,000 car? I can't even imagine most making $90k a year. wow...

But even if you made 'only' $40K-$50K a year, they key is that you're not spending any of it on day-to-day expenses, housing, etc. A year at that rate would get you enough to pay for half the car and finance the rest for a G35-sized note. 2 years in and you've got it paid.

That's assuming you'd spend a year or two in combat to return to the same situation as when you left, but with a $90K BMW. If you were in good shape before, great. If you get more than $40K-$50K a year, even better.

Keep us up to speed on your project ideas.

An E-9 (Master Gunnery SGT/Marines) is the highest enlisted rank and with 26 years or more of service they make only $62,772 not inlcuding housing or food allowance. Depending on the area they live housing allowance fluctuate. Say $20K for housing and food so a top ranking enlisted service member with 26 years or more will make about $80-$85K/year. Now an officer 0-9 (General) with over 26 years makes $145,788/year not including housing or food allowance.

Military pay scale

No I wouldn't. Been in 24 years and been to the desert so many times I've lost count. I have 6 stints 6 months or longer over there now. The beginning of next year I'll be in my 12th paygrade. I know the drill. The best per-diem I've seen has been $98 a day in Bahrain. Most over in the war aren't getting close to that, if anything. I have a wife, no kids, and very few bills and I couldn't afford an M6. Not and have a life too.

If you think most folks go to war and let their checks pile up, you're mistaken. Most military, from mid-grade enlisted on up, are married with kids, bills, etc. 80% of the people I deploy with maintain obligations in the states while they're gone. They save more money, sure, but it's not like you can hoard every dime. Cars, apartments, insurance - those things don't disappear because you're deployed.

Buying the car is one thing, affording it is something else entirely. Eventually the overseas rotations dry up (people transfer - I just rolled to shore duty) and the bills remain.

I based my earlier assumption and statement on paranormal still being active duty. I've known a lot of folks in the military over the years, from 08 on down, and few if any could afford to put a $100,000 car in their driveway - deployments or not. With age and seniority (and the better money) come additional obligations. Most senior folks, officer or enlisted, would rather put their kids through school or buy a nicer house than blow all their nest egg on a car. They'd rather feed their kids than their ego. At least that's been my experience.

But whatever. As Paranormal said in another thread: it's hard to judge when you're not in the box.

Yes, you are. Most folks who deploy still have houses, cars and obligations to maintain even while they are away. Unfortunately the bills don't get put on hold. They make more money while they are deployed, and they do save more, but it isn't like you get this giant windfall by going to the desert.

One of the primary concerns of the (professionals serving as reservists is that their military pay doesn't match their civilian salary and it makes it hard to make ends meet. Our military hospital staff is mostly deployed. To serve the local population of military they have activated reservists to fill the billets. Doctors and dentists pulled out of private practice for one year stints on active duty. Most are junior LTs (O3s). Ouch.

i used to be in the Military and alot of guys E1-E5 have this comlex with fancy things. I don't know about buying an M6 when i could pruchase a small duplex around the base, depending where you're located. Rent it out and enjoy my investment returns and still enjoy the G. I was stationed at Barksdale, LA i wanted to buy a house there but i used all my militarypay to pay for college(Embry-Riddle grad). Moral of the story don't spend money on stupid things before your needs.

Then there's the exception like me. I'm an E8 (done in 16 years), so getting stationed in Bahrain would instantly put me in a six-figure income bracket. By the way, I'm also single with no kids. There's always exceptions, but would I blow my savings on a $100,000 car even though I could after a two year tour in Bahrain? Heaven no, but it could happen. Think about the reenlistment bonuses that are pushing $100K already. Half up front and tax free if you re-up in a combat zone.

He could be contracting. I was offered well into the six figures to go over as a contractor and work on Iraq's wireless system. Some parts of the job were dangerous, the area I would have been in, but one year of that would have been enough to buy a G cash, and a house, and take the year off doing nothing when I got back. But in the end, between the risk, and not wanting to work for those scumbags at Haliburton I said no. The money was tempting but felt too much like blood money. No offence to anyone.
