So I just had a Revelation!

But in the end, between the risk, and not wanting to work for those scumbags at Haliburton I said no. The money was tempting but felt too much like blood money. No offence to anyone.
Was tempted to do it myself after GW1, but was married and thought better of it. It's quick money, and good money, but the conditions aren't great and the opportunity to do it long term isn't really there. All depends on what you find and who we happen to be flogging at the time.
Judging by what we're doing in Iraq, you could make a career out of being a contractor over there.
I talked to a guy recently and he said he was contracted to go work in Iraq to train the national army/police force for one year. He said that they were going to pay him about $120,000 for a year's work. I could not believe it but I don't think he was joking. I guess they really need soldiers over there right now.

There's always exceptions, but would I blow my savings on a $100,000 car even though I could after a two year tour in Bahrain? Heaven no, but it could happen. Think about the reenlistment bonuses that are pushing $100K already. Half up front and tax free if you re-up in a combat zone.
I used to be one too, until I came over to the dark side. I was also an E8 and was screening E9 when I commissioned (drank the coolaid andmy IQ dropped 20 points - now I'm an officer LOL) I made E7 under 11 and made E8 in 14. Agree completely with what you say. There are always exceptions, especially in the military, but GENERALLY what I stated before is accurate - at least in the Navy. One more point about what you said above:There's always exceptions, but would I blow my savings on a $100,000 car even though I could after a two year tour in Bahrain? Heaven no, but it could happen.
Your thinking follows that of most military guys I know. They'd rather have $100K in the bank than $100K in a car. My personal financial situation follows that rule. I could do a lot of things but common sense and being a little older steer me in a different direction.
For the young guys, ask yourself this question:
Would a hot chick be more impressed by $100K in your wallet, or $100K in your driveway? Which would impress YOU more? You can have $100K worth of fun in a car that costs 2/3 less. Look in your driveway at your G and tell me I'm wrong.
This talk about making 6 figs in iraq is nuts. No wonder the war is never gonna end - too many peeps are gettin money!!!...i acutally have a college buddy who took a job in iraq a few yrs ago to get "the big bucks"...and he did for about 18 months...only problem was, when he returned, his resume and skill-set wasnt to appealing to US-based companies for a number of reasons....Although he did land on his feet, and is doing ok for himself, the quick money up front actually hurt him in the long run becasue he was just like a fresh college grad all over again entering the job market...but then again, he blew a lot of it on stupid shiiit and partied for a bit when he got back...prally killed too many brain cells...hahaha.
Also, there was a guy from West Chester PA (next town over) that went to Iraq as a telecommunications contractor...made tons of loot - but if anyone remembers, and i mean no disrespect to anyone who may know him or his family, he lost his life to terrorists in a rather gory fashion (be-headed).....that right there is enough to make me work at the local gas station the rest of my life!
Still, very interesting none the less.....and Jimmy, keep doin ur thing playa...ull be home and speeeding around the mean streets of D-Ware before you know...F/I or no F/I, ur car is still quick, **** its an IP G - isnt IP the fastest color???? LOL

To give my opinion, it does seem a little crazy how much people make in Iraq however who deserves it more than them?
Doesn't this bring back to the classic case of priorities though? I can afford a 100K car right now probably in my situation and im single and 25. Would I do it? No way. In the process of buying a house now in the DC area and after that I probably couldnt afford anything nicer than the G without some sort of hike in salary.
I'd rather not turn this into the "Car Rich House Poor" thread but everyone has their own priorities and what they wanna do. To each their own - just have fun.

Jon, I might be closer to mods these days as I think I'm going to sell the bike. I had a small crash that is getting fixed as we speek but I don't really have the time to ride it anymore. I only put 1400 miles in a year. So the question is home theater, 42 inch plasma or car ****e?!?!
