I scheduled an oil change at my dealership this morning and when I got there, one of the sales guys asked me how long I've had the car and how many miles was on it. I told him that I had it for about a month and there's 1500 miles on it. He told me that I didn't need an oil change till 3750 miles. Then I told him that I heard it was recommended that I get an oil change right after break-in to clean out the metallic particles, etc, etc...He just said no, and to come back at 3750. Was he just lazy? I figure he couldn't have been lying because wouldn't they want my money??? So what do you guys think?

I did my first oil change at 1500. It's your car, do what you want. I'm surprised they turned down business!

he's correct, you dont need it till 3750. but if you really wanted it, he shouldn't have turned you down, unless he's following a certain policy.

Absolutely no need to do that. I feel that even 3750 is conservative.

well...he didn't really turn me down...he just said that I didn't need it. Apparently their system was down this morning, so when I got there they had no idea who had what appointment and what time. So I figured that was an issue. He was real nice about it though, joking that his suggestion was "free of charge." I'm not sure if I should feel uneasy about not getting an oil change though, considering so many people on this board has done so right after break-in.

It's a matter of preference...Some feel it's good to do the first change early, others are happy not.
I personally do it early, but I tend to be a little **** about it.
If nothing else, it makes me feel better.

show that to the dealer, maybe you can educate him as well. Waiting wont to any harm, but if you believe in preventive maintanance (not just basic/required/minimum) then it would appear an early change is good. But regardless, the VQ is widely known to go 150-200K regardless of your first change, so its still very much a personal choice.

My mechanic called me "smart" when I did it at 1400...he knew exactly why I was doing it too...no questions asked. But if the guy your talking to is just a mechanic by "routine", then he really is a rookie and doesn't know why someone would do it. By the way...its no "recommeded" by Infiniti, so you may have confused him...its recommended about car enthusiasts, hardcore mechanics (some), and people who really know thier engine. You don't really have to get it else for peace of mind when driving agressively.

Your link also states on the lab report, that this is perfectly normal for a new engine. It's breaking in. Also, the reason that Nissan recommends their first oil change where they do, is because you can change it every 500 miles if you like, the motor is still going to be breaking in, and you are still going to get particles, there is nothing you can do about it. So you can change it at 500 miles, at 1000 miles, and at 1000 miles with only 500 miles on the oil, that lab report is going to say the same damn thing.

I changed mine at 2200 because I had it on the lift anyway - didn't see any reason not to. I'm sure if I let it go until 3750 it would have been fine, but it was convenient.

You are missing the point of the lab report though. He said that his sample looks like it came from an engine after a 3750 mile OCI, even though it was really just 500 miles. Yes, the particulate matter is normal for an engine that is breaking in, but why not get that junk out of your oil after 1500 miles and start fresh?

right, and its not like we have fantastic OE filters (newer Nissan filters, old ones rocked). Particles aside, flash point and fuel dilution are also higher than need be. I feel that all that wear is good for the first 5K. But I really dont want all the metal *helping* the wear. Dont you think that you'd be assured a more consistant, even breakin with some fresh oil somewhere along the way to 5K? The only reason he changed at 500 is that he didnt like the OE filter and didnt know/trust what the factory oil was. Most of us early changers just 1/2 the first interval (1500-2000). Seems like a nice compromise. I agree 500 is a bit too early, but again, I'm only posting that to show the condition of the oil, not make a case for changing your oil every 500 miles to 5000.

I changed my G's oil at 1500 miles and plan to do so every 2500, starting at 2500. I'll bring the G in for the scheduled maintenance , as I think required.

Fully agree. Here are my first three Blackstone reports. They clearly show the benefits of frequent oil changes in the first 5000 miles.
