Hmm I dunno about this. Maybe this is someone elses slip? That time is unreal. Ive seen guys with SCed cars run slower then that.

lots of people said you need good slicks to get a good time like that. being the "new guy" i am, i know slicks are tires. but what kinds of tires are you guys talking about? like S-03 tires? pirelli? or a whole different tire is called a "slick"

WOW, what a run....but how come the guy running a turbo'ed Z ran a 12.66 and the NA runs a 12.7??????

They can. I guess the question is: Is he making enough power that the slicks are really helping that much?

Keep in mind, I haven't taken delivery yet, so I don't know how much wheelspin the Z or G produces (Obviously they can produce a lot, but I'm talking about effective acceleration). If you have to resist applying full throttle in 1st and the bottom of 2nd gears to avoid excessive wheelspin, then the slicks should be a significant help.

 

Tires are very important at least for the 60'. The last time I was at the track, the best I could do was 14.4 @98-99 mph. I was on T1-s summer tires in 50 degree weather and my rear camber was at -2.0. Although the weather conditions was great, I could not get traction through 1st and 2nd gear. My average 60' was 2.3. On the other hand, a 5AT coupe with just a y-pipe and Z-tube pulled a 14.0 @100 mph on 17" all seasons, which are at home in 50 degree weather. His 60' was 2.1. A good 2.0 60' would've gotten me a 13.8-13.9 run.

 

The only thing I'm wondering about is the date on that time slip: July 10th 2005...

Bottom line is that what needs to be compared is trap speed. That is the best indicator of a car's true speed and power. For example, a stock WRX will be close in the 1/4 time due to the AWD launch, but no doubt our cars are faster and would beat them at any point other than a launch. This guy's trap of 105.XX is very good, but attainable by our cars with lots of bolt-ons...and surely much less than one would expect out of a 12.7. That time should be yielding 110 mph traps, easy. Or, 116, like the turbo'd one. That car would MURDER the 12.7 Z as long as it wasn't from a dig on a track. That's my point, and exactly why you won't EVER get 120mph traps from "simple traction from some hoosiers". I didn't think I ever implied that...

 

Na, I've got plenty of slips showing incorrect dates, times, etc. I've even got slips saying I ran 9.4@345mph in the 1/8 mile and amazing slowed down to 97mph by the time I reached the 1/4 marker

For those doubting this Z's performance, it's entirely possible. Track prep and conditions are very important and greatly influence the outcome of the race, much more than say an average driver vs good driver. The 60 foot he pulled is amazing, but it's still believable. I think it's the limit the car is capable though in it's current configuration. FYI, there are FWD Maximas with 220whp on 26" slicks pulling high 1.6/low 1.7 60 foots. Since the Z is RWD, it can plant that power better therefore getting better 60 foots.

As for slicks equaling cheating, I disagree. IMO, when you go to the track you should set your car up for the track. If you've got the money to get drag tires, by all means do so. Nothing is more annoying than going to a track with crappy prep and you end up spinning your street tires dramatically on launch. Most cars at my track have some sort of drag tire, whether it be slicks or drag radials. It's expensive to drag race so why waste your time with crappy street rubber?

 

I never said slicks was cheating as far as drag racing goes. I said WHEN COMPARING TIMES. I just don't agree with the attitude of "WHOA, a 12.7!!! His car is just as fast as a turboed Z or a modded M3!!!" How would the car do on the way home? Probably slightly slower than a STOCK M3, and WAYYYY slower than the turboed Z. That's where the cheating comment originated. I'm not knocking the guy, rather the misplaced response to the result. Sure it's fair to use slicks when trying to get a good 1/4 time. More power to him. But cars on slicks and those that aren't cannot be compared on the basis of 1/4 E.T. to get a valid comparison. Just like my G35/WRX analogy...the WRX will get better 60 foots all day, but the G will always be the faster car, stock for stock. People just seemed so surprised over the time, when if you put our G's on slicks, we'd be right behind him. The slicks make THAT much difference, probably nearly a full second in E.T....NOT the car. If the car was that fast, it would show in the trap speed. My final comment shall be: He doesn't have a 12.7 car, but a mid 13's car...or else our G's are low 13 cars bone stock. Take your pick, because then you're comparing apples to apples. Dentalstud, OUT!

BTW, IMNSHO, drag racing is a simple sport... your car runs what it runs... there is no cheating in a run-what-you-brung time trial. If your car runs 12.7 on slicks, you run 12.7. If you run 14.2 on street tires, you run 14.2. If you bolt on slicks and go 13.2, you run 13.2... Simple. Don't begrudge the guy because he runs slicks.
