85 in 55 speeding ticket on the turnpike ... NJ-NY point sharing

I copied/paste this because i am in the same situation Im a New Yorker with a ticket from NJ.

Its been a while since I posted here but I figured it would be a good place to ask for some info. On last saturday on my way to E-Town I got pulled over in the Linden area for doing 85 in 55 .... most of the traffic was doing about 80 so I wasnt really going that much faster than everybody else. But I guess that doesnt really matter. I am going to court for sure to try to lower this down since this is my first speeding ticket since i got my license 9 years ago. The cop used pacing to determine the speed which I would assume would be the weakest method available to them in comparison to laser or radar. I have NY license and plates, I am wondering if somebody else from NY got a ticket from NJ and what happened with the information from the court ... on the ticket it says it will be sent to NYDMV, but looking at this page:
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/dmvfaqs.htm#tickets
it says that NY doesnt record out-of-state violations which makes me think all I have to worry about is the $ amount. Then again I have heard from some that the tristate area has a sharing system for points. Can anybody tell me their experience first hand?

Greatly appriceated.

basically, if you have ny license and you get a ticket in nj, you won't get any points, just pay the fine. However, if you have a nj license and you get a ticket in ny, the points transfer over to nj...

hope this helps.

I have a little experience with this..

I was clocked doing 90+ in a 55 on the way down to AC. I was able to explain to the NJ cop that we were late to my friends bachelor party (I had him with me!) so he cut it down to 75.
The only thing I had to do is pay the ticket but the points never transfered over to my NY insurance.

hope this helps.

wow you got lucky. A cop got me doing 90 in a 65 zone in NJ. I told him that i had to go to the bathroom really bad. All he said "I'll write you a ticket quick"
$ 220 bucks.
Im fighting it though. Any sudgestions how i should fight it? My record is clean, this is my first speeding ticket ever.

^heh, I've always wondered how that would hold up "I reeeally have to go to the bathroom officer, im sorry!"

But anyway.. What a bunch of crap!! 85 in the 55.

AND Let me guess, it was after by the GW Bridge/Lincoln Tunnel split area where the 65 drops to 55 for no apparent reason, and not a single person stops doing 70-75. There are people in the left lane that cruse that whole way at 80 the entire time, so its rediculous that the cops can just randomly pull over any one of the cars from their choice. I gauruntee if you were to actually stand in those 55 zones with a radar gun, there isnt a single person doing slower than 65, if that.. even 70 at the slowest.. even including the 18 wheelers. Me and my friends as a joke one day actually did 55 for a few minutes down on the way to NYC and it was funny to see every single car pass us for a duration of about 4 or 5 minutes we were doing it. Shows what everyone thinks of the speed "limit"

I believe the insurance companies do look at NJ tickets in New York. Verify this, but it doesn't surprise me. Those thieves will look for any way to raise your rates...

Your insurance will not go up as the points will not get on your license, so your insurance company will never know. It's pointless to fight it (i fight every damn ticket i get) but the ones in jersey are just too friggin far to try and go fight. However, you can plea bargain in jersey, so you could prolly get it knocked down a bit.

Thanks 2183.
I called the court and a lady told me that if your record is clean and this is the first time they will most likely lower it or dismiss it completely. So im going to take my chances.

Good luck!

BTW, I'm still wondering where it was. Was it in the random 55 drop after the lincon/gw split on the pike?

Ny-nj

I got a ticket from port authority changing lanes in Holland Tunnel 2 years ago. The cop stopped me in Manhattan, but it said NJ on the ticket, and my insurance had no record of it when I got my G two months ago, so I guess they don't transfer. On a side note, I just got pulled over for tints today, but got away with just a warning, after naming few people, and stating that I am working on getting a tint exemption from my doctor hehe
