stealth install on coupe
i am planing to buy the V1 and was wondering if anyone has done a stealth install using the V1. I live in virginia and i heard that they can confiscate ur radar detectors
Re: stealth install on coupe
true, they can confiscate altho lately I've heard they just ticket. no i haven't mounted mine stealth. i'm just visiting. in the hinterlands of va. as long as the cops can't SEE it on in your car, you're ok. why? because they can't detect it with their "detector" detectors. but as soon as I got onto 81North and 66 East, I took mine down, in case some trooper pulled up to my right side and looked in. Mine's not stealth, but it's windshield mounted on the upper left corner behind the post, but below the tinting from the top. I've seen old codgers with "tissue boxes" on the dash board and a little wire running out of it, but that low down isn't optimal for reading radar.

Re: stealth install on coupe
How stealthy? I have mine tucked in the nook in front of the passenger side sunblind and against the side of the map light/sunglasses holder console, with a remote display wedged between the steering unit and the center console, below the air vent (you can sort of see it in one of my interior shots -- the one on top with the big obvious power cord is the GTech, not the Valentine). The detector is pretty much invisible unless you stoop by the passenger window and look up. From the front it's hidden by the tint line. I've heard that some window tints can cause problems with its performance, but so far so good with mine. I guess you could see it through the back window, but with the remote display attached it won't light up, so it's invisible at night.
But in a virtual police state like Virginia, I might find some way to shove it in the sunglass-holder cavity and drill a hole through the front for it to "see" out, although you'd obscure rear radar detection.
The only problem I've had is that the suction cups don't reliably keep the thing attached up there. I also tried velcro, but it peels right off both the window and the headliner. Now I'm thinking maybe super glue on the suction cups, but that's going to make it tough for me to yank it down and hide it if I need to. Anyone got a better idea?

I'm on my third V1 and wouldn't waste my money on anything else. Fortunately I live in a state that does not outlaw the receipt of radio signals. After all, that is what a radar detector is, just a highly specialized receiver.
Have not had any problems at all with the V1 suction cups holding the unit, even when inside temperatures get up to 145°.

Re: stealth install on coupe
Hi Guys,
On the cars that I don't double stick take them to the top of the rearview mirror, I have used double stick (3M foam trim tape) inside the suction cups. That's the way I have it mounted in my Ford Ranger truck. It doesn't come off until you want it off.
(You would think I was a 3M salesman, wouldn't you?)

I'm also interested in a stealth install... just for future reference of course.
