Good point, but my G runs better then it ever did new.

 

Well, I took my G back to the dealer, this last Thursday for its first 1000 mile oil consumption level readings. After 840 miles, the oil level was 1/2 pint low. Now, the service people want me to drive another 1500 miles for the next oil level reading. They said that they are trying to figure an average level of oil consumption. Does this sound correct?

 

1/2 pint? i just did my 1000 miles test and came up 2 and a 1/4 quarts low. Good luck with yours, im either getting a new engine or small block.

 

Wow . . . 2-1/4 qts. Yeah, I was about the same from 1600 to 3400 miles on the odometer. Good luck to you.

 

Andy 2434....Same situation with my 05 G35 6MT. On the way to the airport last week I noticed a clattering sound during accel and decel. It clattered for about the first 5 minutes and then stopped. I thought maybe it had something to do with the cold morning (first of the year). I blew it off and went on my trip. On the way back yesterday (warm afternoon) it started clattering again. I went home and checked the oil (3000 miles since oil change with Nissan filter and 5W30 Mobil1). The oil did not show up at all on the dipstick!

The car has 7050 miles. It took 3 Qts to get it back mid range on the dipstick. I took the engine cover off and looked for leaks and checked under the car. Found nothing. Tomorrow I'm dropping it off at the dealer. Let me know how your consumption test fared. Thanks

 

DWG-35, that clattering sound is unnerving isn't it?

It's been awhile now. I can't wait to finish this engine oil consumption test. Well, I have been on a 1500 - 1500 - 1000 - 1000 mile interval oil consumption test. After each of the first 3 test, my G has measured 1/2 pint low on oil. I can only assume that the 4th test will yield the same results, which I hope is normal. It doesn't seem like much oil to consume. Anyone have any comments on that?

I will be bringing my car back to the dealership in about a weeks time. At which time . . . The final reading will be taken and I will wait for Infiniti's review and comments.

This whole test thing just sucks! I truly enjoy my car. One of the best cars, which I have owned . . . But until this whole matter is over, I think at times that something might be wrong. LOL . . . I have mods, which are sitting in my gararge, waiting.

A quick check of the Maintence Log indicates that oil changes are recommended every 3,750 miles. That's kind of an unusual mileage number to me. Why not 4,000 mi which would be easier for owners to remember?

If the VQ engine consumes a pint of oil every 1,000 miles then (mathmatically) it would be a quart low at 4,000 mi. So, is the 3,750 a 250 mile safety net? Does this level of consumption leave room for increasing consumption as the milage adds up over the years unless the VQ engine is not subject to increasing consumption with normal wear? A performance car seems to need all the oil it can get.

I have put almost exactly 1,000 mi on my 03 6mt which has 5,600 mi on it so far. Since that oil change, it has consumed 1 pint, which is consistent with what you are reporting.

From my limited experience with buying cars, this level of oil consumption is high. My '82 Supra with 246K mi consumes less oil. I wonder what the level of oil consumption will be when the G has 100+ K miles on it?

Andy2434, I notice you also live in CA. I also own an 89 Supra which consumes 3/4 of a quart every 500 or so miles. This is a headache on a long drive because the oil needs to be checked so often. The good thing is that it still tests very clean for smog.

 

Thank you for your comments. It is a bit reassuring to know that my G's oil consumption is on par with others. I'll know within the next couple of weeks.

 

I had the same prob, just was in Dreyer and Reinbold Greenwood in Indy for my 3,700 mile ck up. Told them that my oil level was extremely low...as low as permissible according to the dipstick. They said during the first 5500 miles that the VQ is prone to losing some oil during the breaking-in process. I have no blue smoke, no soot around my tailpipes, no drips in the garage. So naturally I was curious, especially with only 4000k miles on the coupe.

But ANY loss of oil in the first 5500 miles? Seems crappy to me. It pays to be old school and check your fluids regularly. Thanks Dad.

Like Andy said, now I have a baseline established after this trip to the shop.

 

I am just curious. Did the dealer perform any sort of consumption test? How has your car's oil consumption been since there?

 

With all this oil consumption, has the oil light ever gone on for anybody?

 

Very noisy engine valve train chatter. The oil light, if any, never came on. Dealer measured only 2 quarts of oil in container . . . Go figure.

 

I was down to two quarts as well and my oil light flashed on for a second on a hard brake. That was all.

 

Had the same problem. After 10k on the motor, it seems to consume less oil if any at all. I'm going to go back to my royal purple at the next oil change and see how it holds up.

 

YES! Just came back from the dealer. My last test showed 1/4 pint low. The last interval was 1000 miles. It's been documented and I was told that is normal.

I also asked about a ticking sound coming from beneath the car. I was to go with a tech for a ride after the consumption test.

Upon bringing the car back to the service office, the tech told me that the rear axle was rattling/ticking. He said he heard the sound while driving into the service area. Coool! . . . TSB work to be performed and the new bolts are being ordered.
