Is the VW GTI that fast or am I a bad driver?

i was on the jersey turnpike last weekend and there were about 50 VW and Audis heading to a meet. i asked my friend who owns a heavily modded GTI and he mentioned it was their biggest yearly meet, i think it's called summerfest...anyhow, there were a few cars that pulled up and gave me that look, you guys know what that look is, and a random evo that wanted to run...there was a GTI, passat, evo, and myself...needless to say, the order went evo, myself, gti, then the passat..i was neck and neck with the evo, and almost passed him at one point, but for the most part, he pulled on me everytime i shifted to 5th...a few times i let the GTI and passat lead and i would pass them from behind everytime...that's a great feeling...i'm not sure what mods the other cars had but they were def not stock..we hit 110-130 a few times and everyone was friendly...just happy i didn't kill my gf or anyone else...

Are GTIs turbos? When he would accelerate, I would hear a high pitched whirring noise...and it accelerated a lot faster that I thought.
Anyone else had an experience with a GTI? What kind of mod would create that whirring noise? I

We had a 2000 Passat GLX that turned out to be a lemon. It was in the shop for 50 something days before they decided to give me a new car. Ended up with a 2002 Passat which was traded in for the 03 G35. Oh yeah and the 02 got rear ended on the freeway by a big rig. Guess we just had good luck with them? The damage was just to the bumper though.

GTI's are very quick, when they are simply chipped. Keep in mind that their power to weight ratio is incredible, because of how light they are. They are much lighter than the Jettas. Vr6 is no problem at all to take, even if it is maxed out with bolt ons, unless it is F/I. The R32s are quick, but the G35 stock will take it, NO doubt. Im surprised that at higher speeds you didnt start pulling, the VW/Audi's have a sorry excuse for a turbo in them, they are so small. Also those cars begin to slow down at high RPM/speeds, so you should've started pulling. My brother has a 03 20Ann GTI, 6spd with a lot of mods and off the line we are neck/neck, but by the end of 3rd gear, I start pulling and dont stop. Either way, don't ever underestimate German Engineering!
