Is the VW GTI that fast or am I a bad driver?

Had a run-in with a VW GTI...still had him by at least half a length in my stock '05 6MT up to 115mph, when he quit, but I thought I would have smoked him easily.

Are GTIs turbos? When he would accelerate, I would hear a high pitched whirring noise...and it accelerated a lot faster that I thought.

Anyone else had an experience with a GTI? What kind of mod would create that whirring noise? I

I think your just a horrible driver. Sorry, but I would sell your car before you lost to a stock honda civic, or a insight.

Not sure, but stock that car should not be able to keep up.. All I know is that you've got to be careful with some of those cheap looking cars that you would underestimate. Same with some of those civics. They can drop engines and do some mods that are much more cheap and effective than ones we can do.

the R32 is not that slow at all and the 1.8T modded can be faster than stock G35's. I've a had a SC Jetta before and it was very fun to drive.

I test drove one of the new ones
Yes they are turboed but the magazine tested them at 15.1 sec 1/4 mile so maybe it was boosted etc

The GTI/Jetta 1.8T can easily reach ~210hp/240tq with a $500 chip.

My '05 G35 6MT doesn't feel faster than my chipped '01 Jetta Wolfsburg. The VW Jetta and GTI have the exact same engine 1.8 liter turbo engine. A simple $500 chip by GIAC or APR will work magic on the stock 1.8 liter stock engine. Don't be fooled by the small displacement. Remember a stock 2.0 liter Mitsu Evo VIII puts out 270+ HP. Just about most VW Jetta or GTI 1.8 liter turbo owners will reprogram the ECU with a simple chip or ECU programmer that bumps boost to 15 psi vs 8psi stock for their first mod. On the dyno below I was putting out 189 HP and 217 lb-ft to the wheels with just the chip alone and no other intake/exhaust mods. And the car only weighed about 2900 lbs. If you add a bigger downpipe and free flowing exhaust you'd add another 10 WHP. When I drove the Jetta back to back with my G35 it felt much lighter and just as fast. Don't beat yourself up about barely edging out the GTI. Your driving is fine. I won't even try racing them cuz they're ALL chipped.

I was actually considering the GTI when I was getting a car...but after hearing the mighty ("seductive", as infinti.com says) roar of the VQ35... GTI went out the window.

I'd be more afraid of the 1.8T rather than the V6.

Yeah me too those 1.8T's with a lil modding can be CRAZY fast. The R32 I'm pretty sure is just as fast if not a little faster than the G. It's also around the same price and they only made it for a year. I want one still though You shouldn't be surpirsed if a GTI keeps up.

Yeah I wouldn't underestimate those cars...modded they are crazy fast. I have a friend that worked for VW and would get performance parts real cheap and his car was nuts.

If they are turbo or SC, you better watch out. Mine had a Supercharger and was fast, probably not fast as the G with vortech but still a lot of fun.
