fuel tank question?
fuel tank question?
Ok, so i drop my girlfriend off at home last night, and i am driving home and the gas light comes on. I look at the gauge and it is on the small bar right above emtpy, then it went down to the empty line, and after about 3 minutes of driving very carefully (shift at ~2k, coast a lot) the light went off and by the time i got home the gauge was at the 1/4 mark. I filled it up today with the gauge reading just below 1/4, and it only took 13.2 gallons. 1/4 tank should be 5 gallons, so if the guage was on E last night, how did I only take 13.2 gallons? (i topped it off all the way)
Well, the credit of this genius invention would have to go to our wonderful designers that thought we'd be genius enough to drive the car even when the empty sign goes on. Basically, (from my own experience) you have about ~6 gallons left in tank after the empty light goes on. I try to keep my tank about 1/2 full all the time so I dont have to start dailing AAA.
how many miles do you get on a full tank guys? i dont own a G myself YET, but i will soon
can you explain your driving conditions also, such as if you drive though traffic a lot, freeway, accelerate fast, etc. Thanks for the posts!

This happened to me a month or two back, and then it was fine. Regardless, I'm bringing it in to get it fixed. There's a TSB out that seems to describe it.

Theres about 2-3 gallons left when the light lits. When you fill it all the way up, you should pump about 17 gallons or so. This way, you can drive a little bit even tho the light lits up.
Also, when you fill it all the way up, the needle goes beyond F which means when the tank is completely emply, the needle will go below the E line. If you see it, Full~3/4 has smaller guage that 3/3~1/2 and 1/2~1/4.
Think of having an extra line above and below F and E and that should be about right.

Alsom the sensor for the gas in on one side of the tank so when you accelerate hard or brake hard, it gives you different range of fuel left over. If I recall right, when you go up the hill, it lowers...or vice versa... I forgot.
hmm, ok. When I fill it up all the way the needle is only right over the Full line on my 05. On my 04 the needle would go way above the Full line when i filled it up.
lol i just sped through this one so i didn't see if anyone posted this yet. Guys, the reason why you can have your gas light come on, and then if you start driving it easy, you will watch the gas meter climb back up. THe cars copmuter is constantly figuring out what kind of MPG you're getting and uses that to formulate how far your distance is till empty. So if your driving it hard, you get worse MPG and the car will show a lower reading on the gas meter, but if you start to drive it easy, your MPG improves as well as the distance to empty, the meter goes back up. Figured this out, 1. because of my navy, which shows me my distance till empty. 2. I was getting on the highway and driving real aggressive, (coming from costa mesa, ca) redlining it all the way up the freeway onramp, up through 4th or 5th gear, all of a sudden my gas light comes on, i go dam, ok time to get gas, so i start to drive easy, my distance to empty foes from 20 miles, to 70 miles. Lol, made it all the way to Santa Clarita which was my destination...
I'm having the same problem with my car. According to the dealer and Infiniti, there is definitely a problem. I dropped my car off for the 4th time last week for the same problem. The Infiniti techs are involved now, and they haven't been able to figure it out. I've put about 1200 miles on my loaner since I picked it up. It sure is nice being able to go anywhere I want without having to worry about where to park my car.
