1st oil change?

I've read somewhere that you should have your oil changed by around 1200 miles. Is that right? I'm pushing 1500...should I take it in for a change?
Also, I've been checking the oil every week. No change in oil level. I thought some oil would've been burned out during the break in process.

Re: 1st oil change?

The maintenance manual recommends 3,750 miles for the first oil change. The concept behind the first 1200 mile change was from a long time ago when oil filters weren't as effective at trapping metal particles in the oil from the break-in process. Apparently, its no longer necessary with today's oil filters.

It doesn't hurt to change it now, but its probably of no benefit, either.

Re: 1st oil change?

Hello:i am change my first oil, one week after i got it,some say i am nuts but this is what i think...i will have bout 25 hours of running time on the motor by wednesday, i got my car on 24th of june...if you drive mostly around city, you might only have 6~7 hundren miles on it after a week of 25 hours of driving, but if you drive mostly freeways you might have 1500 miles, and i was recommend to do so after 500 miles on the new motor by a friend who build his own coustom cars,so do what you think is good for YOUR car, for me haveing an peace of mind is worth the money in the long run, first couple oil change will be short interval, but i dont think i will change it as offten as time go on tho...s.w.

Re: 1st oil change?

I tend to believe what limeg35 says.. I have a friend who is a professional racer and motor builder.. he said change the oil at 500 miles as well... so probably not essential but if you have a bit of spare time and $ what the hey? lol

Changing the oil in your car is like RAM in a computer or like sex, you can never do it too much.

Re: 1st oil change?

Interesting comparison. LOL. Taking it to the dealership puts an extra risk of the car getting scratched, or something else going wrong. So, I will only take it to the dealer if I have to, hence reduce the risk. LOL. In this case, it's 3,500 miles, and that's what most people have been saying. Keep checking your oil. As long as it's clear, you have nothing to worry about, but don't go above 3,500 miles. My two cents...

Re: 1st oil change?

All those activities, are things I do myself. I change my own oil and do routine maintenance on my cars and my Harley, have for years. That way I know it's done right, and do not have the dealer fears you have. Since I have had my coupe (January) I have not been back to the dealer. I will go back for warranty stuff, when my list (which is now pretty short) gets a little longer.

Re: 1st oil change?

For you guys who cahnge oil early, don't use Synthetic Oil - it stops the break-in process. So if you change to synthetic after 500 miles, your engine will not be completely broken in.

Wait till the normal recommended time (3750 or whatever) before switching over to synthetic.
