05 Braking power!

Well, I finally went on my first mini vacation on my 05 6MT G since I purchased it in Mid July. I had a blast. It was really fun to drive the G up the coast to Santa Barbara from Los Angeles. Well, I'll tell you all about the trip another time but what I wanted to mention is about the G's Brakes.

I was going back from Santa Barbara and missed my exit. So, I waited for the next exit and wouldn't you know it, it is one of those exit on the left side of the freeway (on the 101) and not the right. What this means is that the exit is an off ramp on the left side and it has a downward slope at about 20 degrees. So, not only do you need to stop going from 70 or 80 to zero, you have to do it in a short distance. Not so bad accept there wasn't a clearly marked stop sign so I kept looking for one way ahead of me. When I did see it, I had about 50 feet to stop from 60 and it was at a down angle (me going down the ramp). So, I slammed on the brakes and believe it or not, I came to a complete stop with only going 1 car length beyond the stop sign. I actually hesistated whether I wanted to stop since I didn't see any car to the left of me. Well, I did stop, and there was no squeelching (spelling) of the tires. Man, I felt my whole body come to a dead stop (like in those roller coasters where they just instantly stop). I have never felt a car do that before! I'm just glad there wasn't a car in that intersection, even though I was only one car lenght over the stop sign but that might be enough to get an accident. It was my fault for not slowing down and I had only roughly 50 or so feet to stop and was on an downward incline.

I just thought I share with you fellow G drivers that along with 300 hp, the car also has some really good brakes. Glad to know they put some decent braks on a car that weighs as much as it does. Happy driving y'all!

I'll be the first: You had at least 100 feet to stop, since the car is incapable of less than 110-foot stops from 60. But yeah, the car's brakes are pretty good. Now, if you only had the Brembos, you could've done that over and over and over again...with the same result.

Yes, it probably was more than 50 feet or so and probably wasn't 60 miles an hour either. I was going about 80 and started to slow down to enter the left lane and had slowed down more once I hit the off-ramp. So, yeah I'm sure I wasn't doing 60 but close I'm sure.

I did it 10 times with my 05 brakes stopping from 50-60 at my track event last month. No problems. You could definitely smell them though. The 05 brakes are awesome. The Brembos are pretty equal now. A guy with a 350z had Brembos and he had issues after a few stops (squealing really loud) and wasn't stopping as good anymore.

Are the brakes on the '05 Coupe the same as the Sedan? I know my '05 doesn't stop as quickly as my '04 did, not bad, but a longer stopping distance, but hey, no brake dust on my wheels is worth it!

Yes, the Coupe has the same as the Sedan (except the G35x, which has smaller rotors). As I remember reading, they redesign the brakes on the 05 vs the 03-04. The 03-04 had smaller rotors. Also, the 03-04 had brakes problems as well. You can do a search on that on this forum. The 03-04 brakes had harder stopping feel (meaning, you barely step on the brakes and you would lurch forward) which some folks called "too grabby". So, the 05 had larger rotors and less "grabby" feel to them but should stop on par with the Brembos. Funny, when I got my car my brakes weren't so grabby but after about 1500 miles and a car wash, it is kinda grabby now.
