With gas prices so high, I'm wondering how low is too low to rev while cruising?

I think its fair to complain about gas now that none of us have ever experienced these hikes before (unless you lived in the 60's/70's gas shortage crap)....its hard when you know how much you used to pay vs. now...

Also since my car has been in the shop due to a rearend incident for 29 days, it has mostly been sitting still. Would this have affected my MPG in any way? My friend mentioned to me that my transmission oil has went bad since its just been sitting there for a month w/o any warmup driving. Before this incident i used to get 16MPG and up all with city driving. Is he right? or is my car just problematic.

*Yes, 13-15 seems low to me, i've never had MPG that low, not even on weekends playing around, driving hard, but my friends 5MT gets about the same as yours.
*Your car has no problems, for a 5MT your rpm's seem right to me, you really have to be crawling to get it to shift at a lower point, it the 6MT you have more low end torque so it seems effortless, no lugging etc; you can take it down pretty low as long as you don't foresee accellerating quickly for awhile. It's very easy to gain speed slowly, like in traffic, the car rolls so easily, you basicall are just keeping it rolling.
*The transmission question is a good one... The fluid used these days is much better than previous years and resists condensation, but some people will argue that; personally, I would change it, but I don't think it's a factor in the MPG's being lower.
I also would consider an ECU reset, this may help... I wonder if your battery was disconnected while the car sat up or if it drained down??? Keep this in mind, fuel will condensate too, so you may want to use a good additive to treat that, a month is not really a long time, but it's only a couple of dollars & can't hurt.

The result was an increase to 24.6 on just one tankful. I was running in 6th at 35MPH and I think the RPM was around 1100-1200 or so. I didn't shift much over 2000 at anytime. Now, will a clutch cost me more in the future? Possibly but I only did it for a week to see what would happen. Higher mileage is possible.

does that feeling of saving gas make you feel ok when car's pass you? being the slow car is too foreign and weird. anyone else's thoughts?

The rich don't become rich by throwing money aside.
Even Bill Gates said so on some sitcom "fraser?"
The better mileage comes from cruising at low RPM not shifting at low RPM.
I find 1 to 2 to 5 fairly comfortable shift sequence. Same with 1 to 3 to 5.
