Can someone explain the decision on the emergency brake?

Can someone explain the decision on the emergency brake? Why did they place it where they did instead of making it a hand break? It doesn't seem to be in a really friendly place if you have to use it.

Just curious.

Why would the transmission matter? I had a Honda Accord as my last vehicle and I had a hand brake (automatic transmission).

Infiniti put handbrakes on the MT, and foot brakes on the AT.

Why they did it? Not sure.

I can't speak for all infiniti cars but most have their emergency breaks by the foot. However, they have hand break for the MT because that's where the clutch is at otherwise it would be foot as well.

i think they placed the emergency brake/parking brake in that 5at next to the pedals due to interior design. it frees up the space in the center console and allows for the cup holders and larger armrest/storage bin. it also give the center a cleaner look. you figure in an automatic transmission car, you don't use the emergency brake too often....basically when you're parking on a hill. whereas, in a manual car, you still should use it whenever you park even if you put it in gear.

In manual transmissions, the hand/emergency brake is placed top-center for a very good reason. It offers easier access for those whom choose to use it while on a steep hill prior to releasing the clutch pedal. If it were located down below, drivers would have a next to impossible time operating 3 pedals in lieu of two.

In an automatic transmission equipped car, it really doesn't matter where the said is located. Actually, being located down below offers a better look with less clutter.

That's my guess.

My wife's AT Maxima has a hand brake. I believe in the G35, they use the hand operate emergency brake on the 6MT since a foot operated one wouldn't fit next to the clutch pedal and they use the foot operated emergency brake in the 5AT because of the size of the transmission, filling up the space in the tunnel between the seats, leaving no room for the hand operated emergency brake linkage below.

sorry AT guys, but i still think. rev high in 1st. put it in neutral between 1st and second. crank wheel into corner, pull hand break, and release hand break. rev hard, put it in second and dump the clutch. pull around the corner. watch out for the spin!

ya, ya, you can just go to 2nd and just press clutch in while engaging/disengaging the handbreaking, but this is way much more fun!
