Did I Read Correctly About The Borla Headers?

Correct me if I am wrong...and I am hoping someone PLEASE corrects me, but did I read in another post that the Borla Headers are only giving gains of 8 hp. I would have thought that it was a lot more than that. Please tell me this was a typo. I don't want to spend 600 dollars for 8 horsepower.

Good question. $600 huh? Wow, who are you buying from?

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

i believe it was 16 but thats with headers+pulleys
Its $600 and according to Yuichi, could take up to 8 hours to install! That really defeats the purpose when you have to spend $500 for installation alone!

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

If they are a long tube style header they will yeild more TQ than HP and 8 HP is a lot for just a header on a 280 HP car. This is alos probably in addition to a high flow exhaust and intake. If one mod gets you 10 HP and another gets you 15 HP that does not necessarily gain you 25 HP when they are installed together. The more you reduce the back pressure the more you will have an increase in HP at high RPMs but you will lose low end TQ. You need to look at the total power curve of a mod like headers and not just the peak HP figure.

That is absolutely crazy. I have the B&B Exhaust and the Injen intake. I have yet to have it dynod but i am guesstimating that those two mods brought it from 280 to about 305 hp. I am not spending thousands of dollars to add 8 more hp. I need to call Borla.

25HP from an exhaust & intake on a G35? Seems like a little wishful thinking to me. I could be wrong though.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

I would like to see some corrected before and after dyno runs with these mods. My Corvette got 5 HP with an exhaust. 15 HP with a CAI. That is a 350 HP car. Expecting more than a 10% increase in HP from bolt ons is not realistic. Also did you not read my explanation of long tube headers increasing low end TQ? That is much more usefull than high end HP for everyday use. Obsessing over manufacture's claims of peak HP figures appears very newbie-ish. decreases in 1/4 mile times would yeild more important real world results.

You are very correct. Torque gains are very important, I did get a little caught off gurad by the seemingly low hp numbers. As for the exhaust and intake those numbers are just the manufacturers claimed hp numbers for each individually. I am going to contact Borla and see what they say.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

It's funny how people talk a lot about what they don't know anything about. I can't speak for the G35 coupe BUT my last car an Acura TL dyno'd an extra 25 Hp with I/H/E. All car are different and will gain more or less HP/TRQ depending on how well they were tuned at the factory. Heck , for that matter the same car can easily be 5-10 hp different from stock. Lots of variables affect a car's #'s. Anybody who thinks it isn't possible for ANY car to get 20+ HP from bolt-ons hasn't had much experience tuning and mod'n imports.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

Ok I think I'll reply to this post since it was my coupe that yielded an 8 HP gain. Once again I must first say I am very sorry for not having sheets as these long summer days have been brutal (try working\going to school from 11-14 hrs. a day 5 days a week...YEESH). In any case, I will try to get some sheets from Borla at a future date. Back to the headers though... when I picked up my car from Borla, David Borla told me the dyno showed an 8HP gain from the headers alone (this is a coupe with Borla True Dual and Injen CAI). I haven't looked at the HP or Torque curve as I have no sheets but I must say my car sounds very good and feels as though it added a good amount of power. In any case I have no baseline to compare to but I have setup for an independent dyno on Wedsnesday, so keep lurking the forums for a post of the sheets. Further, IF (and it's a big IF) all goes well and I get a technosquare ECU I will re-dyno at the same independent shop the day after the ecu is put in to see what gains can be seen from that. Hope this helps everyone looking for mods for a coupe.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

Cut and dry. Is it worth it for me to drop 600 dollars plus labor for the headers. I have the B&B Exhaust and Injen CAI. Having the headers is it worth it for me in your honest opinion and will I hear and feel a big difference. That is really what is important to me. Plus whoever corrected my misspelling in my title, Thanks.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

Kilrmy, Your welcome for the corrections. We mods and admins don't always get the time to make the corrections but sometimes have a little extra time. The name of the editor is then stamped on the post with date and time.
As far as the Borla headers: 8 hp would seem to be hard to find with such a highly tuned engine (from the factory) so in that respect it's worth it (IMHO).
The issue in this case, as Ramborami has pointed out, is install cost. He's been told 8 hrs, I've been told 5 hrs or more, because the area is very tight to work in. So you have to decide yourself > $600 for the headers and maybe $500 for install. That's a lot of $$$$$$ per hp. Too much for me, but then my budget may be more limiting than others'
Good luck with your mods.
I am however getting the Borla TD sytem. Better hp/$ gain.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

In all honestly, I don't know about your financial situation but if you want a good mod for your car I would say go for it. These are probably the cheapest headers around and for an 8HP gain it it well worth it. Compare this to Nismo headers which are ~2X the price of the Borla not including the installation (probably same installation times). However, like I said before these mods for me were free as I "tested" them (I kinda lucked out as they built these already and just wanted to fit them on the coupe to ensure fitment so no potential harm to my coupe). In any case, if you think it's worth it I would say go for it!

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

I actually have been saving for the headers a little bit so the money for them is not a big deal and I have a friend who will do the install real cheap so I think I may order them this week or maybe next. I have wanted them real bad and I figure I will treat myself. I just got me a new girl so I better spend money on me b4 it starts goin to her. Thanks for the info guys.

Re: Did I Read Write About The Borla Headers

Congrats on the new lady. Yeh, she wouldn't like to wear headers around her neck. lol
If you've got a friend with all the tools and know how, that'll save a bundle. I like the price of the headers themselves and the hp gain on the VQ, only drawback (we've heard) is install, so would you post your install experience for us? maybe with some pics from below if you get a hoist.
Good luck with both 'projects' bro.......
