1st gear noise with clutch still pressed ('05)

I press the clutch to the floor, blip the throttle, put the stick in 1st gear at say 20 mph and then i hear a noise, like a quiet but high pitched reving sound, almost like something is griding. i don't know. The thing is, since the clutch is still pressed in all the way, i would think that nothing would be connected yet, and i could put the stick anywhere without the tranny making noise.

has anyone had the same experience?

Why would you shift into 1st going 20 mph ??? I think thats close to redline in that gear. For it to go into 1st at that speed you would have to keep it reved quite a bit for the shifter to go in smoothly. I have never tried this at that speed, so I am not 100% anybody else ?

sounds like a crazy move to me...why not stay in 2nd... I think it's your engine or tranny trying to keep you from F'ing something up.

Red line in first is 38 mph. You're right about revving it up though if you were shifting into first at that speed. Synchros would complain if you weren't rev matching closely which would be round 4k.

Its your gears that you're hearing. If you've ever heard a porsche with straight cut gearing, you'd recognize that sound again in a heartbeat. I don't know how our gears are cut, but by the sound of em, they're pretty aggressive for a car with an infiniti badge on it.

first of all, i don't usually do this, but it's not redline its about 4k. I can rev match into it. But that all doesn't even matter. In my orignial post, i never let go of the clutch, why would i be hearing the gears when I'm not engaging the clutch? I don't understand what straight cut gears is? I am just worried that I am hearing a noise with the clutch completely depressed, shouldn't the gears be completely disconnected and I should be able to do whatever without hearing gears? Is this normal? someone try it and tell me. thanx

somoene mentioned to stay in 2nd in 20mph. in 2nd you're about at 2-3k rpm and the car doesn't pull at all. You should be able to accelerate really hard from 20 mph.

do you hear the noise if you free rev the car in neutral with the clutch pedal pressed down?

what about free revving with the clutch pedal out?

You may have the clutch pressed all the way into the floor but least you forget that the rear wheels are driving the car at this point. The trans is being spun by the drive shaft/forward motion of the car not the engine. When you try to put the car into first gear @ 20mph the internals of the trans will be spun up by the forward motion of the car.

Although max speed for first gear is 38mph that would be when you are accelerating not so the trans can be downshifted at those speeds.

You will kill the trans /syncros doing this too often.

you are absolutely right. I don't know why someone wants to downshift into 1st at 20 mph.

+1 ... people don't understand that the gears and tranny are actually connected to the wheels and not the engine as u had mentioned. rev matching will also not help. rev matching is designed to match up the clutch discs and not the collars in the tranny. if u want to match your collars up at speed (especially for 1st) throw your stick into neutral, let go of the clutch, punch the accelerator and then shift back into 1st. this way u will spin the the gears up so that the collars being used can better match up in your tranny. otherwise your synchros are just getting a strenuous workout.
