6MT Coupe Transmission Question

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing the following issue with the transmission on the 6MT coupe:

- When I slow down in first gear (like to go over speed bumps), I engage the clutch anywhere between 1500 ~ 2500 rpms, and slowly crawl over the bumps... but when I engage the clutch, I hear a sound like the transmission isn't happy with what I am doing (I know, sounds stupid, but I can't really describe it... the sound is just not natural)... However, if I am in first gear and engage the clutch above 2500 rpm, then everything is cool.

I usually do that, but I hate engaging the clutch before I have to for the following reasons:

1. I would rather use the engine to slow down at low speeds as to save on the Brembos (and not generate brake dust)

2. I don't want to "ride the clutch", meaning that I don't like rolling in with the clutch engaged... Someone told me that is not good for the clutch...

Anyone have similar experience and advise... Thanks

Jaime

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

Brake pads for Brembo are $70 and takes 30 minutes to change. Clutch disk and labor to R&R is going to be significantly more expensive. I would suggest using your brake to slow down. Primary reason people used to use the engine to slow down is because old drum brakes doesn't work very well when hot. That is no longer a problem.

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

dude, I think you are describing the same problem I am having. I have taken it into the dealership twice now to get it fixed, and they just keep giving me the old--All we hear in the normal transmission noises. For some reason they are jacking me around. Some members here have suggested that it is a worn out Throw-out bearing. Which means the dealer just doesn't want to perform all of the labor involved in replacing that part. So I am still searching for the answer, But I tell you, it sure is an unnatural and annoying noise. To me it sounds like a rattling noise/ like something is loose. Let me know if you find anything.

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

Hey guys,

Thanks for the advice, but this problem only happens while I am slowing down, never when I am accelerating... Also, I usually only hear this when I am going slowly, in let's say a parking lot, where you are in 1st gear and you are continuously accelerating and slowing down over speed bumps.

Secondly, using the engine to slow down is not really bad for the engine as long as you keep the rpms at a decent level. Also, the brembo's may be $70, but the more often you change them, the more you cut the rotors, which are expensive to replace. That is really what I am trying to avoid when I use the engine to slow down... Just my 2 cents..

Thanks for the posts everyone... Love this forum...

Jaime

p.s. I spilled soda in my car today and almost flipped out... I think that I am a little too meticulous about this car!

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

The 1st gear in the G's/350's is geared so low, I NEVER use it to crawl. Use 2nd instead. The torque should be more than enough to pull the car along without stalling. I do this for heavy traffic, parking lots, etc.

In fact I routinely start from 2nd as long as the car is moving - such as coming to a corner, almost stopping, then taking off again. I only use 1st if I am at a complete stop.

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

This is my first manual car and I found out you cant shift to 1st when the car is crawling because I can feel that its killing the clutch, 2nd gear is the best gear to be even stopping at the intersection and mostly 3rd gear when making a slow turn, I feel the rev matches when you do this. Also I notice that if you shift below 1500 rpm you will hear that clicking noise if you pop the clutch a little faster, seems like the car wants to be shifted above 2000 rpm, even at the red line it will shift smoothly but 1500 rpm shifting..eeehhhh..

I do the exact same thing. The ONLY time I'll crawl in first is if it's from a complete stop, and I'm in bumper to bumper traffic at less than 5 MPH. In all other instances, you're better off staying in second.

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

I too experience this very often, 1st and second gear going about 10~20 MPH, I took it to the Metro Infiniti Dealer twice already, they claim that it is a normal noise, all the 6MT G coupe does that. But I told them when I first got the car it did not have the noise, they just told me to take it in when it is "REALLY BAD"..... WTF??? I expected more than this from a top rated customer service dealer...

I was thinkin', what if we all filed petition together and demand to have this issue fixed, anyone with me?

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

Just curious.......I hear "my noise" most when I am pulling into my garage, or moving very slowely next to a building/highway divider. I guess my point is that its coming from under the car, so I hear it the most when it has something for the sound to bounce off of. you guys getting the same thing?

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

Maybe I wasn't so clear in my other post - but this is NOT a problem people. This is normal as far as I'm aware of (at least for Nissans).

My Nissan pickup behaves the exact same way, and its a '94. Transmissions were not meant to be downshifted into 1st gear while the car is in motion (no synchros maybe?).

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

My "noise" must be different, cuz if you heard it, you wouldn't be saying that its not a problem. There is a post out there right now "Noise in Neutral" that is more like my noise. any suggestions after reading that thread.

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

I'm getting this noise too. From a standing stop through first and a little bit into second it sounds like slight rattling noise from underneath the car. It goes away just after shifting into second gear. Its very noticeable at a drive thru pulling out with the wall reflecting the noise. I only have 400mi so far, so can't tell if its getting worse yet. Anyone else having this issue get it fixed?

Re: 6MT Coupe Transmission Question

my current and previous cars are/were clutch. i usually downshift just because i like the controlled stop. these were leases so i didn't go over 36k.

however, i never had problem with clutches. assuming normal driving, what is the life expectancy of a clutch.
