G35 Coupe seating question

Hi, first timer here and looking to get the wife a G35. We really like the car and she wants the coupe while I think the sedan is the route to go for us. Dont get me wrong, im hot rod guy at heart, but we have a 16 mo old baby and I am concerned about the space. The question is this, does anyone here have the coupe and a child in the back? if so how much of a pain in the a!# is it? I like the coupe's looks but am having a hard time buying it because of the room. I need some opinions. I know the back seat is useless for anyone over about 5' 8" or so but for a child I'm thinking we should be ok. I need some input here.

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

The concern in the back of the coupe is not legroom or lateral room, it's headroom. So a small child should be fine.

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

I've made several long trips as well as daily excursions with a 6-year old and a 6-month old. It's a bit of a pain in the *** for the rear facing seat but he'll be facing forward in less than 6 months so we can deal until then. I almost bought a sedan also until a coupe passed me on the highway. After that there was no question about what to get.

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

My kids age 4 and 6 ride very comfortably all the time, but at this point we're using just one booster for my 4 year old daughter. They get in and out on their own so it's easy for us. I can see it being a lot more of a pain if you have to put your kid in and out of the child seat and reach back to buckle them in. You also have to readjust the tilt on your seat every time someone enters or exits the rear which is a bit of a pain. One complaint my kids had was the sun beating down from the rear window since the extreme slant of the rear window puts their heads directly under the sun all the time. That was taken care of with some tint. The other complaint is that they sit low in the car and can't see out the windows at all. I just make sure they have something to keep them occupied like books or toys. XM sat radio also has a couple of kids channels that they like. I was stopped once for a carpool lane violation but that was because the CHP could not see my kids sitting in the rear. He said "nice ride" and let me on my way.

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

I've got a 5 month old, and we drive around with him alot in the G coupe. The key is to have a second car that can carry you all comfortably aswell. We've also got a Dodge Durango for all that. I'm 6'-3" and my wife is 6'-1", so we do have a little trouble with the rear facing car seat, but like someone else said, they're only going to be facing backwards for a short time. My son does like to ride in the G already, I can tell. And he will like it alot more when he's facing foward and can see where we are going.

your baby should fit fine, but having a two door is a pain to get her in and out and don't forget the lack of trunk room. diaper bags, etc....

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

The definitely need something to keep them busy. Right now my 6yo has a Gameboy SP. I'm getting a drop down screen for the back soon so both will have something to keep them occupied (quiet).

That carpool lane story is too dam funny.

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

the backseat is very fooling. compared to other coupes it is gigantic. I have very large and tall friends and they always tell me how much they are suprised with the amount of space. they are very compfortable. The only thing is waiting for the seat to go up and returning it to your desired postion when it goes back

Hey RazorX,

Question regarding your child seat in the coupe. I have a 3-month old, and I haven't put him in the G yet.

Do you use a blanket of towels under the car seat so as to not scratch the leather? Do you put him in the center of the back seat, or the actual seat? Do you use the LATCH system for the car seat? Any other problems, hints?

Thanks in advance.

Re: G35 Coupe seating question

Masetodd,
My son still requires a booster seat (by law - occasionally we skirt that, though - he's a pretty big 3 year old). When I'm using the booster in the Coupe I ABSOLUTELY use a towel or blanket to pad the bottom of the booster, to protect the leather. Most booster seats don't have a base that's kind to leather, and the configuration of the back seat is such that most boosters will not sit squarely on the center portion of the seat - at least part will end up resting on the side bolsters, which will "dent" after some time, whether a child is sitting in it or not - and that's even with padding. My advice would be to use the booster when neccesary, but remove it when not in use. Oh, and I don't use the LATCH system - seems to be more of a pain than anything else. The belts work just fine.

I use towels under my rear facing seat and my kid's booster. Can't let any hard plastic dig into the leather. I use the latch on the booster and the rear facing has the new lower latch which is actually easier to install than the belt.

Huh? I'm the same height, and I tried sitting back there and headroom was a definite problem for me. In fact, I couldn't sit upright and in a normal position without my head smacked up against the rear window. I need to slouch quite a bit in the seat for my head to clear the window. It's not horrible, but its not comfortable for a long trip either. I wouldn't want to travel any more than an hour like that.

For kids though, that back seat should be fine. In fact, kids would probably find it fun back there - plenty of legroom for them too.
