I'm having a new engine dropped in my car next week at the dealer due to excessive oil consumption at 11,000 miles. Engine is a crate motor (long block). Here's my question. My car is a 05 MTcoupe 298hp. How do I know they are putting in the right engine and not the 280hp version? Are there any serial # I should check?

I would think that the wiring harness would probably be different for the 298 HP motor and that it definitely requires a different ECU(different redline, different speedlimiter, I'm sure the fuel mapping is different, etc).

I don't think they could very easily stick the 280 HP engine in your car without changing other stuff.

The 298 hp engines have shorter intake runners than the 280 hp flavor.

Correct me if I'm wrong...
but with a long block, all the external equip. (plenums, manifolds etc)
are reused.

I beleive you are correct. Sounds like if it fits all my external parts it has to be the correct motor. Thanks guys.

The cam covers are different (smooth) on the 260/280/287hp engine.

My engine was burning a quart every 1000 miles. That's way to much in between oil changes for a brand new vehicle. If the dealer tells you that's normal find another dealer. Do a search under oil consumption, you'll find some threads.

I need to stop visiting this site. The more I visit, the more problems I see with the G35. All year I've been saving and planning to buy this car now I'm afraid they are not reliable cars. In the past I had a G20 and a J30...both reliable cars that gave years of reliable, trouble free driving. What gives with Infiniti? Newer cars should be better, not worse.

remember theres like 35000 G35 owners here. Your odds are excellent that your car will have no problems. You don't see the threads "Everything is fine with my car" because it's so damn boring!

tight tolerances lead to burning oil?

i've got 12,000 non-gentle miles on my car and it doesn't burn any oil. the dealer is screwing with you on that IMHO. Ford finds 1qt / 1000 miles acceptable, but this is not a ford.

If it helps..
I have 32K on mine & don't add any oil at all between changes..

when he said, "tight tolerances" did he mean that your engine was not within those "tight tolerances"? Cause that would be a good reason why you're burning a quart every 1000 miles.
