OK so on my way to a client today I get pulled over on the freeway by a bike cop... I had the radio very loud and didn't hear my hardwired X50 blasting KA until it was too late... Anyway, I pull over, the cop totally sees my radar detector (perfectly legal in AZ, cops usually throw the book at you when they catch you speeding with one though), asks me for my license, registration and proof of insurance, and how fast I thought I was going. I told him that I figured around 75 or so, which still would have been 1mph under criminal. He then told me I was clocked going 86 mph, which would be 31mph over the limit! On top of that I had to inform him that I did in fact have insurance; I just didn’t have any proof on me at the time. So he goes back to his bike, I'm nervous as hell (criminal speed = big insurance premium hikes), he then came back and handed me the ticket, which he then asked me to sign. After looking at the violation box, I noticed that he wrote down "Greater than 65 in a 55" and the "civil" box was checked... Even though I hate cops, I had to thank him. On his way back to his bike he honestly said "nice ride, try to keep it under 100".

I have a clean driving history, but I took the traffic school 6 months ago, meaning I'm going to have to take the hit. I called the court and verified that I can fax in a copy of my insurance card to avoid having to show up there. In about a month I’m going to pay for 6 months of insurance (I'm with Geico and I pay $720something every 6 months for full coverage, 100/300 on everything, and I’m 24. I figure if I take that route the ticket wont affect my rates until I'm 25, and by then they'll drop a lot from the age increase alone...

in california you could request for level two traffic school, meaning if you already took a traffic school course and got another ticket before that 18 months has expired, you could go and your insurance company will never know about it.

 

wow i didn't know that. and thats exactly what happening with me now. i didn't know you are able to do that. is it stated anywhere where i can show to the judge? do i even have to show him or do i just call the court and ask? by the way, i'm a juvenile ( under 18 ).

what does "civil" mean when its marked?

yeah i've gotten level 2 traffic school before (in ca though).

 

wish I had that option... California gets all the cool stuff.

g356spd06, you can do it when you're under 21 or 18. but it has to be a reasonable ticket, well.. not really. my friend did street racing and got a speeding ticket before that, he wanted to clear one of the two points from street racing and the judge let him.

you have to schedule a court appearance with the clerk, tell 'em you want to request level two traffic school with the judge. ;]

 

after all the anti-cop threads lately, its good to see someone who posts some positive news.

 

Most cops are cool and they know that virtually 100% of drivers speed. So if you don't give them a lot of **** when they stop you for speeding, they will more than likely cut you a break.

 

Honesty is much better.

In the last 6 times i've been pulled over i've TOLD THE TRUTH! shocking I know.

81 in a 55. Guy asked me how fast i was going I said 80.. he said 81, but thanks for telling the truth.
he then handed me back my info and sent me on my way.

Similar things happened since.

Fact-
every time you think the cop is being a nice guy for not giving you the greater penalty you are wrong. The cop doesn't want to do the paperwork associated with handing down a criminal level ticket. If you give 'em crap they will suck it up and give it to you...and since you now saddled him with all that paperwork he might as well do a little more and nail you for a few more things. Always show respect to cops.

 

Actually, I would get a copy of your driving record (~ $12) and see if the driving course was reported on your record. I know a lot of the time they don't report it, and it never ends up on there. I have taken defensive driving 2 times in one year several times.

This is for Texas, don't know how much different it is there, but it can't hurt.

I pay $1150 with Geico every six months, and I'm 26.... but that's NY for ya.
